Which Clear Coat to use?

I'm putting down the Epoxy-Guard kits this weekend. Is an epoxy clear coat, or a urethane clear coat the way to go? How much time after I put down the epoxy, do I have to put a clear coat on? Thanks.

In our pro installations, we always put the poly last because it has the hardness and thus the abrasion resistance. We actually do base color coat, then clear epoxy, then clear poly on top--this is the recommended method from the techs at Arizona Polymer, who taught me.

As far as re-coat times, all epoxies are different, read those instructions carefully. There is a guy that just posted here right before you and he did his floor himself and now he has a sticky mess on his hands.

Thanks for the response. Epoxy-Guard states that a clear coat is not necessary with their floor system and so do not really sell it. This leaves me guessing what to use and when to install it. I will try to find the thread you are referring to and see what went wrong. Thanks.

Welcome rustech. What part of California are you in? There is a ton of really good info here in various threads-- I suggest you take your time & read through lots of them -- it will give you lots of tips and pointers.

Good luck -- and post some before & after pictures!

I see alot of polyurethanes are supposed to go on top because of the hardness and abrasion resistance. The "Shore D" hardness test on several urethanes Ive looked up is about 72 and the epoxies its about 80. The higher the number the harder. am I missing something here ? wouldnt you want harder on top ?
