Used randomly and probably infrequently around the house. I would like to spend no more than $200. Any other brands?

DeWalt

or

Port-Cable

Look for a machine that is neither oilless or direct drive. If you buy either of those versions you'll have a lot less greif by just flushin your $$$ down the crapper.

Around here used compressors are giveaway on Craigslist.

That model from Sears got a ton (51) almost all 5 star reviews from people owning them, comes up $20 off for clearance, but its out of stock everyplace I have checked in SoCal and Oversized Delivery: $124.88.

Found one not too far away, sick of waiting, its NOT the greatest, but it is clearly decent, just ordered $193 incl tax.

Socal Craigslist is freaking nuts on compressors, mostly asking close to non sale prices, or ANCIENT junk. I've been looking for a couple months for anything decent and vertical, and its just people unloading bad ones at high prices. Bigger units and some bargains to be had, but not portables.

I'm agree with Franz, stay away from oilless and direct drive. I have owned two of the 33 gal, 6HP ;-) direct drive oilless Sears units (don't know who made them for Sears) and was very disappointed. Aside from the incredible noise (had to wear hearing protection in my small garage) the first unit quit after less than a year of normal use (just impact tools and spay guns, no grinders) with a motor problem. I returned it under an extended warranty and the replacement unit lasted another three years before the pump burned up.

I didn't wait around to fix it. I just sold it at a yard sale and bought a 60 gal belt driven unit with cast iron pump and splash lubrication. No more problems, and the noise level is much improved.

Looking over a lot of different models, experiences seem to vary, some models good, some bad. Tomorrow I will fire mine up for the first time, but I'm not too worried about it doing the job for me, this model seems like a good one. Maybe thats why Sears discontinued it.

Rochester, NY Craigslist has a load of compressors, but that don't help if yer in CaliFooey.

Not much helps us here on the left coast. They always talk about California falling into the Pacific, but I wonder how the east coast stays afloat under the weight of all that used machinery back there.

If you are going to be using anything other than nailers, avoid the compact units. They don't have large enough tanks to run much else without constantly cycling.

I'm with most others as far as the direct drive 3450 RPM units are concerned. Way too little air produced in relation to the noise generated.

So what would be a good recommendation for the smallest belt drive, oiled unit. I would get a pancake one just for small finish nailing jobs, and the other for the shop, but ROOM is at a premium.

Small verticals are all fairly new, everything cheap is direct drive, and most good isn't small. Harbor Freight model 92504 is about $350 and 29 gallons with a 220 4 hp belt drive and twin iron cylinders oil splash and 14.5 cfm at 90 psi. Lowes had something like it in a 60 gallon for $399, but less flow.

Really on size, unless you "need" portable, everything fixed and vertical takes up essentially the same amount of floor space.

This isn't a one size fits all, what works depends on what you need.
