Which drill press used a JT2 spindle taper?

In a box of random chucks was a nice Jacobs marked as having a JT2 mount. In all the DPs I've owned, I've never had one with a JT2. Anyone have any experience with these or remember a machine using this one?

Drill press spindles very seldom have a Jacobs taper on them. The exception is the old Craftsman drill presses, which have a male JT33 taper.

Normally the drill press spindle will have a female Morse taper, the chuck will have a female Jacobs taper, and you use an arbor to join the two together. You can get arbors from all the usual suspects in a wide variety of taper combinations.

Can't agree with the above.
Yes, some DPs come with MT spindles, especially the larger sizes.
No, the MT is not universal; most smaller DPs come with JT spindles.
Yes, every Delta, Powermatic and Craftsman DP I've ever owned or worked on had JT33 spindles as an option.

Jack, that JT2 taper chuck is usually mounted to a MT arbor of the desired size for use in a lathe or drill press with a female MT quill. Can't remember ever seeing a drill press with a male taper that wasn't JT33.

Seems odd that the JT2 and JT33 are so close in size, what could be the logic in having two tapers that close together, but not interchangeable?

Since the JT33 chucks are far more common, I'm using them on MT adapters in the tailstock of all three of my lathes. If this JT2 had come along when I was setting up a lathe, it would have been same cost to buy the JT2 adapter, but now, doubt I'll bother.

I have seen a Japanese ~15" drill press with at JT6 spindle taper. Fortunately I was able to find a new JT6 Spanish chuck on ebay. That drill press was the quietest running drill press I have ever seen.

Now that I'm thinking of it, the smaller Asian bench top DPs come with a JT spindle which is not a JT33, but I've forgotten which JT they have.

Both JT6 and JT33 appear to be fill-in sizes added after the original five were defined.

I would imagine the logic for JT33 is that, when you make it integrated with the spindle, it's less likely to be bent or otherwise damaged that a JT2 would be. 0.624" vs 0.559".

The other notable difference is that a JT2 has a sharper taper than other Jacobs tapers, about 1"/ft vs 0.6"–0.75"/ft, and as a result it's not going to have as much holding force as a JT33.
