The first two pics is an Atlas and is similar to a model according to owner. Guard is rattling and may need to be tightened and the spring for the handle to bring up needs to be rewound. Price $295 location 150 miles away.

The last is Walker Turner waiting on info on it but owner says nothing wrong with it. Price $200 location is 60 miles away.

Which one or neither? Will be a restore as I have time and funds.

What are your intended purpose just to restore or do you have plans to use it?

I'm not an expert when it comes to vintage drill presses but both prices seem a bit high, especially on the Atlas when you factor in a 300 mile round trip.

Yes I’m thinking the same but I know they aren’t that many that come up. I looked pretty hard here for a year and off/on for a few years before that.

As a WT owner I’ll say get the Atlas... just kidding get the WT if it’s in good shape. I have floor model WT and it’s a really good drill press.

I looked for a year or so in my area before I found my Craftsman. It was listed @ $160 but I got it for $120. It's in really good shape and works perfectly. I've cleaned it up a bit from when I got it but haven't completely disassembled and restored it yet.

I'm currently designing a mobile workbench to mount the drill press and sander on so I can ditch the sheet metal tool stands. ae42d0a769ce958f58cf21626860fa58.jpg62a1a75348dd00c44c06c979b8208696.jpg

Are your plans to drill mostly wood or metal? Which one has the lower speed if metal. The WT does not have the MT2 spindle so you will have more room between the table and spindle. The prices maybe a little high but there are a lot of collectors out there that restore these.

I have no drill press and so will be general purpose. My friend stated prices are high but they are hard to find and acquire so the “beggars can’t be choosers” rule is probably being applied here.

I would not buy a W-T at that price ($200) unless it was already refurbished with new bearings. Those bearings could easily cost $100 for the set.

I have owned several Atlas presses, and they are really nice. Very smooth and well made. I would not pay more than $150 for a bench model Atlas especially with the spindle cover missing.

Ideally you can keep looking for a Delta DP220 or a Craftsman.

The Walker Turner is the better built drill press. Presuming the bearing sound good that would be my choice. Not knowing your location I cannot give any pricing recommendations.

Exmaxima1 has had better luck with Atlas drill presses that me. I had a few over the years (6x, 7x series) and sold them all off. I found the tolerance problems with the spindle pulley to sleeve preventing proper tightening of the belt was a show stopper. Some of the places they used Zamak (zink pot metal) was problematic. On a couple of mine the clamp shoes for the drill press table always wanted to slide on the post. Fortunately the craftsman 150 machined steel clamp assembly was drop-in and worked much better. I personally would get a Delta, Clausing or Buffalo drill press. The Craftsman 150 series also is pretty good.

Was telling my friend the same thing about the cover. I’ve been looking for the Delta’s but I have better luck finding gold than one of those.

I paid $150. Runs pretty good. Has a Jacobs Chuck in it. The PO was a machinist and just past. He had this in his shop and they were getting ready to sell his place. There’s several things there I wished I could afford such as Hobart welder, dial indicator, lift table, and a couple of Dayton grinders. His personal shop was NICE.

Looks good to me, Walker Turner made some nice stuff.
I flipped one like that for a little more then you paid so I think you did good.

Of course now that you have one, you will start seeing others for sale so don't get too attached.

It still want a Delta. Maybe floor model now that I saw the Shop Fox roller... I have a terrible affliction like most on this forum and it’s getting worse... [emoji23]
