Which grinder and which ratchet to keep

Ive inherited some tools from my dad due to him moving to memory care and im trying to downsize a little as i have a tendency to keep a spare for the spare when the spare fails.

which grinder should i keep and which 3/8 ratchets should i keep (top 3)?

Grinder - K&F

Ratchets - The round head and the 43785's.

- For me personally. I see little reason not to keep all the ratchets as they take up very little storage space.

I would keep the non Ryobi grinder, and for sure the ratchet with the finger wheel under the head 43788, and which ever one you remember him using the most.

which grinder? that's easy. the ryobi. it appears to be newer, in better condition and more complete with guards and shields. if you ever need anything for it, the odds of getting repair parts would be better.

that other grinder, while it looks very similar and possibly identical it is an unknown generic brand without any safety equipment.


even so. a pretty sure indicator of a grinders condition can be done in a simple test. turn it on, let it come up to full speed and then turn it off. the faster it comes up to full speed the better and the longer it takes to spool down the better. it should also run visibly true and have little end play. if it struggles to come up to speed it has very little power and if it quickly growls to a stop it potentially has bad bearings and could likely be out of balance or have a bent shaft

I would keep all of the ratchets, they only take a small space in a toolbox or draw... if I had to pick one, I'd go with 43788 with the thumb wheel. I have it in both 1/4 (43178 & 43187) and 3/8, they are my go to for a lot of projects.

I would check the grinders. Use a 1/4in piece of steel and have at it. The one that stalls the least wins.

Time to spool up and wind down are very much dependent on the rotating mass. Since the K&F has only one wheel, it only needs half the power to get up to speed in the same time as the Ryobi. Again, winding down will also take only half the time if everything else is equal. A better method is to check the amp draw. The K&F wins that, hands down.

Keep the ratchets. I could care less about the grinders.

Keep the ratchets. They don’t occupy much space or weight. If you have ditch some the Stanley and the VN craftsman. I’d sell the RyobI myself, but I know nothing about the other brand to compare it to.

Flip a coin on the grinder and keep all the ratchets. You'll be kicking yourself for getting rid of the ratchets.
