Some time ago, I needed to use a large hex head socket. I borrowed a co-workers Proto allen wrench socket, Now I find that I need one again, So I am going to go out and buy my own socket. The proto has a roll pin that holds the bit into the socket. I have found a usa made craftsman socket and the bit is held in by a set screw. Which is the best way to hold a bit in? ...Rich..
It has a 9/16 bit...

I would think the roll pin is better since the set screw can back out unless you add some loctite to prevent that.

If you break the roll pinned one and want to replace the hex bit I think you will have to go the mfg to replace it as drilling hex key stock is beyond most peoples equipment. In the setscrew one you can change the bit easily or exchange it for a longer one quickly. My $.02 and worth everything you paid for it.

snap on are the best IMO. roll pins get loose and break. the set screw ones loosen up and the bit falls out. the press fit ones are the best

I agree if you can find them press fit is the best there is a reason the higher end companies have changed there designs plus the set screw and roll pin designs can and will crack the socket under heavy loads.

Another vote for the press fit!

Snap On, Stahlwille, Ko Ken and Nepros are all press fit! I'd be happy with any of them!

Snap On used to use a roll pin to hold the bit in place, the roll pin came loose over time working itself out
