Which is more efficient? Gas or Electric

According to the calculator I used, I can use either a Modine HD30 gas heater or the Modine Electromode EUH10B34CT 10/7.5 KW, 240/208 volts, 1 phase at 49 amps electric. With gas in my area at a cost of 7.67 MCF and electricity at .06 cents per KWhr, which is the least expensive to operate figuring I'm in Ohio on Lake Erie? I would like to keep the garage at 40-45 degrees and bump it up 10 degrees when I am working out there. Temperatures are to erratic to figure a constant as it varies sometimes by 30 degrees from early morning to the next evening.

To know for sure, you will need to have a heating contractor do a detailed load calculation on your garage, heating contractors have computerized load software that allows us to plug in the local gas and electric rates and give annual cost based on local averages of weather.

generally the gas will cost less to run
someone needs to do the calcs for you to know for sure though

You have some of the answer in front of you.

An MCF of gas is 1000 cubic feet. Gas has roughly 1000 btu per cubic foot, so a 1000 cubic feet has (1000 x 1000) or one million btu. You are paying $7.67 for a million btu, or about $0.77 per 100,000 btu.

Compare this to electricity. For a 100,000 btu resistance heater, 29,240 watts of electricity will be required. 29,240 watts equals 29.2 kilowatts. At $0.06 per KW, the same amount of heat will cost about $1.75, or roughly, more than twice as much per btu.

But this is not really a "Fair and Balanced" comparison, plus where are you getting these kind of residential gas prices? Most national residential gas prices are well over $10 per MCF.

Thanks, this really helps. I am getting the costs of my electricity and gas from my bills. NE Ohio near Cleveland, Dominion East OH Gas NE. Electricity is local coal fired power plant
