Which Knipex bolt cutters?

It need's to fit in a backpack. Need a SHTF set for work so I don't get stuck. I've been carrying a Harbor Freight set and haven't had to use it yet. But it wouldn't hurt investing in a Knipex pair. The one time I use it, it'll be worth it. It'll be cutting just a traditional master lock.

I'd try to get something like the knipex 71 32 200. They have the notch in them and comfort grips.

Junk.Pure fanboy nonsense.
Get a rechargeable Dremel type(1/8"shank) rotary tool and some cutoff wheels.
If it's all charged up you can cut an automotive axle with 7-10 discs.
That "bolt cutter" will call home on anything over 1/4' thick recycled Hyundai rod.

I concur. The abrasive disk mentioned above seems to be the most feasable compact option.

Not to mention hiding it in a backpack for high mobility. You won't want the dremel as that will be too loud and might get you caught. I'd say look for a full size set with extendable handles.

Once you sell some of your loot you get using the HF cutters, should be no problem to upgrade.

My dremel would be great, but I stay offshore for several days and bounce around from platform to platform. That means I would have to carry the charger also. Don't think that would work too well for me. Have to save room on the helicopter so I only get one bag.

The smaller knipex cutters that are recommended above might be too small for a padlock. I was looking for something around 14" or so give or take.

I have a pair of those and they definitely would not do the trick - assuming the trick is cutting through a padlock shackle.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Sounds a bit nefarious to me.

If you want a pair of Knipex that can get through a padlock shackle, might I suggest the Knipex 71 72 460. The 460 indicates overall length in millimeters (460 mm = 18.11 in.). They make them bigger should you want a pair to live in the trunk of your car (71 72 610 ~24", 71 72 760 ~30", 71 72 910 ~36").

I had a friend who kept a pair in the trunk of his car and used it numerous times because his car got locked in a lot late at night. If you do end up using them for this type of job, be polite and cut the link of chain closest to the end and not the lock itself so that it can easily be relocked by whomever.

It's used to open locks on fuel platforms. Being in the gulf things get rusty very quick. Not every Helicopter company shares fuel. Sometimes people get stuck on a platform with fuel, but they can't get to it. I've had them get rusted on me before and luckily there was a tool shed on this platform. They had some cutters. Not every platform is maned, and certainly doesn't have a tool shed. I'm just preparing for when it happens again. We go through locks like crazy.

Personally, I say don't lock it. Fuel isn't an option.

Ah, got it. I'd say leverage will be your best friend as in the bigger the bolt cutters the easier it will be. I've cut 1/4" shackles with 14" bolt cutters before but it wasn't easy. As an aside I remember a Sergeant when I was in the Army who could bust a laminated Master Lock with any pair of common slip joint pliers available. There was a trick to it, but he never shared.

I see. It might also be a good idea to have an extra set of cutting jaws on hand too. Something to think about. Good luck

Is this something you need to do once or twice, or repeat multiple times per day? Dremels are quite multipurpose, but not if you need to make 10+ cuts per day.

Big full size bolt cutters would do it and quick, but probably won't fit n you backpack. Depending on clearance, an m12 portaband will easily and quickly do it; how big is your backpack. One battery could probably get you about 20 cuts, if that isn't enough, a 2nd battery is small enough to carry.

A cordless die grinder, many tools could work depending on how many cuts you need to make, what kind of clearance you have, how big and still fit in your BP, and price is always a factor.
