Which oil for 2 stroke injection?

Today I got a Yamaha PW 50 dirt bike for the kids. It hasn't ran in 4 years but was running last time it was supposed to be. It has an oil injection system and does not use pre-mix. What type of oil is best to use in the resivor and in the crankcase? I have zero experience with 2 stroke motors.

I stick with the OEM's branded oil as the various bikes and sleds Ive had always seemed to start easier after sitting long term with it. I also recommend high octane (90+) for the same reason.

We have lots of 2 cycle mix equipment at work, have recently switched to full synthetic (sp), for the boats injection system we use OEM oil. Never had any issues, I think engineers advice is solid.

As said, start out with the mfg brand of oil from a dealer.
It will cost more, but it will save a lot of hassel if you need to ask for help.
2 strokes do not have crankcase oil.
The fuel/oil mix goes through the crankcase as a mist and lubes everything on it's way to the cylinder.
Do use preimum gas.
The extra pennies are the best you will spend.
Make sure all the injection system passages are clean, and wires are tight.
That system mixs the oil needed in relation to the stress on the engine.
It needs to monitor all kinds of stuff to work right.

And to answer your second question, 2 stroke engines don't have oil in the crankcase, they depend on the oil in the gasoline (either mixed or injected) to oil their bearings. They DO have oil in their transmission, get a manual for your bike on how often it needs to be changed and what to use, 90w, ATF etc.

When I worked with/for Tim Bender he was the exclusive aftermarket products developer for Yamaha, and a significant cnowcross/circle track competotor for Yamaha.I ask him once why I never saw any Yamalube in the shop or trailers. His reply was "I wouldnt use that **** on my kids bicycle chain"and then immeadiatly changed the subject. All I ever saw there was Castroil.Ive used Amsoil since the mid 80's in all of my vehicles and power equipment and have never had an engine failure that could in any way be traced back to lubrication problems.

edit) All the above said,I would use whatever they reccomend in the trans/primary drive because IF it has a wet clutch the friction modifyers must be correct for the application.

FWIW-I run nothing but Honda oils in all my bikes, always have, and have never had an oil related failure.2 stroke,or 4.But again........it's a HONDA:rocker:

I've wrenched on 2 strokes for many years, raced, ridden, and ported them as well. I've run a number of oils, and have proven results from a a number of oils. But first I would highly suggest you disconnect the oil injection system and go to a premix instead. Should be pretty easy to find the steps to disconnect the system on the 'net.

The best oil I've run is Amsoil, without question. Beyond that the most readily available oil that has given me great results is Golden Spectro.

I guess it isn't actually a "crankcase" it's a shaft drive bike so I suppose it's a gearcase. Manufacturer recommended 10W-40. Still have some issues though. I took the carb out and cleaned it good (it was gummed up bad).

If you plan on doing any off throttle coasting retain the oil injection system.

DO NOT disconnect the oil injection and run premix!

the pw 50 is in such a low state of tune you can use any 2 cycle oil.

do use the recommended trans lube.

the pw50 has TINY jets. clean fuel is a must!

Absolutely correct! Any "injection" style oil would work. Yamalube works well for it and that bike will not use much anyways. Keep it simple. Run good gas and an injection oil and you will be just fine. The only time I would say get away from a manufactuer brand oil is maybe in a high performance application. A manufactuer is not going to recommend their own oil if its not gonna work with or stand up to their motor in original form. That thing should have no problem bringing years of fun, enjoy!

Incorrect, off throttle coasting will not starve the motor for oil, the auto clutch in the PW50 won't cause the motor to rev during off throttle coasting anyway. If you have been in a two stroke you understand the amount of oil that pools in the crankcase, it takes a lot to starve one of oil.

Notice the OP indicated this bike hasn't run in 4 years? I've seen more issues caused by oil injection systems, age compounds the issues. For me it was cheap insurance as I was always certain the engine was properly lubricated. At that time all of our machines ran premix so it was also easier to provide the same fuel to all. Might not be the case now as 4 strokes are dominant these days.

I not a fan of Yamalube at all.
