I was driving out in the country and seen this old drill press sitting out in a field, sinking in about 6" of mud. I finially tracked the owner down and asked him how long it had been sitting there. He said about 4 years. I asked him if he would be intersted in selling it. We agreed on a price of $100. (all I actually needed was the motor). It took three of us to get it out of the mud and roll it on the trailer. I plan on cleaning it up and painting it. Just what would be the best paint to use? Epoxy or just regular enamel? I looked on the tag and it is a Dayton drill press, 20" Made in Twain. So I think it would be worth fixing up. (rather than just robbing the motor off it) The shaft seems to move and I imagine the motor will have to be disassembled and cleaned. It looked like mice had been living in it.

I am a huge fan of Hammerite, in silver hammered look. But any good enamel should work.

This guy here details his restoration of a drill press.

Looks like he just went down to Shermin Williams and picked up some paint there. He even posted the card for the custom colored paint formula.

"I had a paint match done on my Walker-Turner S975 Shaper at Sherwin Williams. I used their Direct To Metal Alkyd Enamel rather than the Industrial Latex because I wanted semi-gloss. The formula is:"

I use implement paint from Tractor Supply. With the hardner it is tough as nails.

If the head turns out to be junk you can use the base and pillar to hold a grinder or other tool. I used a heavy sucker like the one you have to mount my bead roller.
