I realize that this is an old thread but, Has any one that is commenting on plywood not being up to fire code taking in to consideration the number of garages in the world that are just stud framing? I would hazard a guess that 90% of garages in any ones neighborhood are unfinished. And I would have chosen 1/2 plywood.

If it is a garage attached to a dwelling, you are correct.
If it is a detached garage,, line the walls with tissue paper, no code violation (IRC). Unless there is an odd local code that forbids it.

Plywood won't pass the firecode. You need to check with the local building dept

for what you need to install to pass code, (unless you are not getting a permit.)

There is additives and paint with the additives already in it that are sold. They will cost a bit though.

The face of a sheet of plywood is not all that flamable. Even with a torch it's tricky. The edges should be pretty well sealed if you paint it, and that keeps the risk of fire really low.

OSB is a different animal IMHO. There are too many nooks and crannies for a spark to make a home. But all of this is purely my opinion.

Half of my garage is 1/2" OSB (7/16) and the other half is 1/2" BC plywood (15/32) that I got for free. I think 1/2" thick is plenty, I can hang anything anywhere I want. 3/4" would likely be overkill, extra weight for nothing except a bit more sound containment.
