I need to move the motor perches on my old YJ this weekend. My MIG welder was stolen last year and I can't afford to replace it right now. All is not lost as I still have my trusty AC/DC stick welder set up to work as a poor mans TIG. My question is what kind of filler rod would you recommend to weld motor mount perches onto a Jeep frame? Everything will be clean of course I'm just not sure if if I need something different than mild steel rod.

I suppose I could just use it as a stick welder but I think I will get prettier welds using my TIG torch.

For most work in mild steel. I use ER70S-6 in the 1/16" diameter. The welding salesman usually brings me Harris brand, as I dont specify a brand when ordering steel. Very rarely I need thicker 3/32". Depends on how thick your base metal is.

For aluminum I like AlcoTec. Everything else comes from Lincoln or Crown Alloys.

I use Linde 65 for everything steel, including 4130.....

NOTE; there is a warning in the book about welding 4130 over 3/16" thick

The two 70 tensile series mentioned above should work fine. I have never used the linde 65... But if the metal starts to outgas or get porosity, I would grind it back out and use something like SS312 alloy for dissimilar or unknown steels. I always prefer it for maintenance repairs on steel anyways. Although a little more expensive, the characteristics are superior to the mild steel rods. It never hurts to keep some on hand. If all else fails Stick welding with 7018 would be easiest and probably the best.
