this is the exact reason why I bought a Snap On ratchet. Because the switch says "On" and "Off". Put it in the "On" position to put the bolt on, and the "Off" position to take it off. ;)

That's fine until you get past the big 40 and have trouble reading up close. Sometimes I have to use my fingers to see if something has left hand threads when it is down someplace where I can't see well.

I had a guy at work ask me how to slow an air cylinder down. I told him they were metered out so you close the bottom valve to slow the down movement. Blank stare. I then said turn the bottom knob clockwise. I was facing east and the tool he was on was facing west. He then turned to face his tool and said, so turn it this way, motioning ccw. Still don't know how he passed the hiring exam. He also asked me if you check fuses with the dvm on a/c or d/c.

Yeh, I'm gonna put up my hand here. My older brother had a "Meccano" set ( not sure if it is something available in the USA, and is certainly way more high tech than the basic bits of drilled steel that it used to be- basically like lego but it all holds together with bolts) ...that I played with from the age of 3 ( nowadays you'd probably be jailed for letting a baby play with 1/4" long bolts and even smaller nuts... I'm sure I didn't swallow or place up my nose more than the usual allocation. It really taught me right hand threads for life- if I have a reverse thread item nowadays I need to keep repeating in my head "undoing , undoing undoing" when I want to tighten it or else my lower brain takes over THEN I get confused..

Mostly true, fairly big money. I have a set similar to the one in the pic I linked (I had one like it as a kid...), with the motor, that I picked up a couple of years ago at a yard sale (I did well at that yard sale) for $10 IIR. I also got a box of very old newspapers and magazines, and a beautiful working Sansui 9090DB receiver. One of the more powerful receivers and the best they made for that model series. Some other stuff, but I don't remember the details anymore.

When I was a young hot rodder, one of our buddies bought a Talladega Torino with the 428 Cobra Jet motor (NO clearance at the sides of the engine). He knew nothing about tools or cars really, but he liked hanging out with all of us, and wanted his own muscle car. One night at the gas station where we hung out, he decided to pull his car in and change the spark plugs. He started on the passenger side, first plug. It was stuck, so he got in front of the grille and put a breaker bar on that plug, leaned backwards and pulled with all his weight down towards the floor. I looked over and saw him, and just started saying, "Hey, are you turning that the right way...?" When the plug snapped off in the cylinder head. OUCH!
