Which Workbench stool is best?

I just got a Gladiator 6" adjustable maple-top workbench. I want to get a comfortable stool so I can sit and relax while I do my thing. Does anyone have a recommendation?

I really would like something with a seat back, and hydraulic height adjustment. I weigh 200+ lbs., so some weak candy *** stool is not going to hold up. I have 4 bad discs, so comfort is an absolute necessity. When it comes to my achin' back price is not much of an issue, so value is not as important as quality and comfort. On the other hand, I don't want it to be too big and bulky either.

Sounds like you want one of these

I have an old office chair in my garage and a Torin shop stool with no back. Both of them are comfortable for different tasks. I don't think from your description you should really be looking for the traditional shop stool.

Old guy opinion: soft seat, height adjustable. Depending on your work you may or may not want wheels, swivel seat, gas strut. If you are doing fine work such as electronics, office type chair can work. If you are using your muscles taking stuff apart, it's really helpful to have a fixed base. I had an old steel draftsmanship chair with a friction screw to set height. It swiveled, but had no wheels.

Last consideration is the floor surface.

For a out of the ball park idea, have a look at drum thrones. I have this one and it is unbelievably comfortable.

Got the perfect chair for ya. I'm 200lbs+, have had 3 lower spine surgeries and I'm never comfortable...until I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago. A little pricey at $159.00, but well worth it. And the quality is excellent and it's got a freaking gear shift knob! Garage Art.com is also one of the GJ Sponsors, so you will get a break on the price for being an Alliance member. If you want one call Steve, let him know your an Alliance member and he'll hook you up. I have the all black chair.

we’ve just had an office refurb and they took my old comfortable chair away and gave me some modern shite; I was extremely upset and within a few days I got backache. I had to go and find my old chair and sneakily get it back early one morning.

I have this Gas Monkey stool. It’s adjustable. I had one that was more like a chair, but would sometimes get a surprise if I wasn’t paying attention when I sat. I like that I can sit on the Gas Monkey one from any direction. I still have the other one because it’s more comfortable and I use it when I know I will be stationary for a bit.

I have gotten by with metal stool with a hardboard seat and metal backrest for years. That one you found looks SOOOO comfy, I am sorely tempted but I would worry that it is too nice for my workbench. The first solder splatter, glue glob or grease stain would really upset me.

Really you like these? I checked out their stuff at SEMA this year and that particular chair made me feel like I was constantly slipping off the front. It just didn't work for me at all even though I wanted to like it cause it looked super cool.

Our son got me a Craftsman pneumatic adjustable height chair back stool for Christmas last year. I previously had the backless Harbor Freight Tools stool that has a flame job upholstery on it, very inexpensive, but I prefer the comfort of the Harbor Freight stool to the Craftsman chair back. I am over 200 pounds and I prefer the Harbor Freight backless stool to the comfort of the Craftsman chair back stool.

I did modify the Harbor Freights stool by putting some stamped steel electrical box 1/2 inch plugs that snap in into the four tubular Harbor Freight stool legs. I added crutch tip rubbers for the Harbor Freight legs to keep the hollow legs from punching through the crutch tip pads. The chair is very stable and is more comfortable for me than the Craftsman chair back stool. You could probably find washers that fit inside the crutch tips on the stool legs and use those instead of using the stamped steel electrical box plugs snapped into the Harbor Freight Tools chair legs.

Google "work bench stool with wheels" and do the image search.. you'll get a ton a results that's easier to pick from. You'll be able to find something more geared to what you may want or need.. one thing to consider - are you able to get your knees under your bench, like a normal table and chair. The work table I made - I cant.. so I'm never able to use the stool I have as good as I could have.

This one looks very similar to the one at Harbor Freight. We have it at our shop, not terrible, but not the best either...

I have 2 Craftsman stools and 2 Traveler brand stool from TSC. The latter is very similar to the Cman stuff, just slightly less padding. I'm happy with either of them but the Cman are a little more comfortable.

Another suggestion for a drum throne here (I'm a music teacher who plays drums, so yea...).

The ones I like the most are the Roc-n-Soc brand. They're the most comfortable and durable I've found. Mine is over 10yrs old and has been all over the east coast in some of the most beer soaked and glitter covered environments you can imagine

Sounds like you might want one in a timpani height- they're generally taller and will come with the back support.

The Lunar and Motion series Roc-n-Soc thrones will accept wheels if you want something mobile.

For a mechanic's seat, I use an old, big-cushioned office chair with the back removed. It was free :D

my tall seat is an old barstool with a back.
roadside/trash day find.

for comfort at lower levels, i use an old office chair with the back removed.

the office chair base is much more stable, and rolls easier, than any rolling mechanics seat ive ever used.

as an added bonus, old office chairs are usually free...

I have one of those Craftsman stools and it is literally a pain in my *** but I have been told I don’t have a lot of padding back there.

I do a lot of sitting at my workbench, 3D modeling, 3D printing and etc. I probably need more of a drafting stool. Any recommendations?
