So long story short.
Gutted master bath
Removed old janky whirlpool tub.
Old janky tub was hard wired into GFCI.
Bought new whirlpool tub. Has a wire with 3 prong ground plug to plug into an outlet.

Question for you all.

Can simply cut off the plug and hardware the new tub into the GFCI just like the old tub?

Thanks for your time fellas.

If you want to install it per the NEC, no you can not simply cut the plug off.. Your local authority may have guidance as well.

You would need to set a GFCI outlet, that is accessible, or a receptacle that is served by a GFCI breaker and plug the tub in to it.

Depending on the tub, there may be alternate directions to "remove" the plug cable and replace it with a hard wired cable..back to the GFCI breaker.

The tub is U/L listed with the plug on the cord.

Why would you cut the plug off and potentially void the manu. warranty?

Just plug it into a GFCI outlet.

When I put in our whirlpool tub I put in a new circuit with a single socket GFCI low on the wall right inside the whirlpool access panel, and plugged the whirlpool cord into it there. This is exactly as the instructions stated and what i read in the codes. It was not difficult.

Ok. Thanks for the info fellas. You guys said what I thought you would say.

I had already wired up GFCI outlets for the tub. I was just hoping to do away with a plug and just wire it directly like the old tub.

Thanks for your time. I appreciate it.
