HELP!

Survived Irene but now my washing machine is not working. Water filled, motor running, goes through all the cycles just fine. The TOP PART of the middle spindle in the tub, don't know what it's called, the spiral portion that move the cloths from the top to the bottom, is not turning. The BOTTOM PART of the spindle, the part that move the cloths in a circle, is turning OK, and strong. It suppose to turn a bit, pause, turn a bit pause, etc. Any idea?

It is a Whirpool LA9500XTW1. Washers are tools, right? :)

It's an "agitator."

It sounds like it might be a transmission issue. Usually about all you can do is check the belt, and belt tension so start with that.

Good luck.

I had a similar problem with my Kenmore (made by Whirlpool) and it's likely the agitator dogs that have broken. If so it's super easy and cheap to fix. Take a look at this page, especially the "Weak or No Agitation' section. Should explain it pretty well and you can order the parts from them if you don't want to get them locally. (Not affiliated with that site at all, just was very helpful, reasonably priced and parts arrived quickly!)

Good luck
Tommy

Thanks guys.

It was the dogs. If I flip the dogs around in the "holder", it seems to work, at least spinning by hand. I will give it a try.

I placed the order for a set of 4 dogs anyway. $1.00 for the set. $6.95 for shipping.

Often, not knowing how to get the parts loose or where the release tab or pry points are that is the biggest challenge. Many years ago, I could not figure out how to release the spring clip that holds the exterior body to the frame. I ended up calling a repair man. I was loose lip and told him not figuring it out. He kept stalling and ask me to check the power, etc. Then I turned around, I suddenly heard a lound "clink" sound. I turned and saw him quickly put away a screw driver. That is when I figured out you just stick the screw driver in the hole with the clip and pry. He knew if I knew how to do it, I will not call him back again. Well, that was true. Years later, I needed repair again but I was very busy with my job. So, I called someone else. I ask the new guy how to open the spring clip. He told me right the way.

As I disassemble the agitator dog and cam assembly. I find there are a film of grease on the parts. What grease should I use on the parts after I clean them?
