I was able to sneak up to the garage for 48 hours this week. I've been dreading finishing the back of the garage since there is so much stuff packed in there.

I cleaned it all out, moved the cabinets, took the tire racks down and you can't see under the stairs is my compressor and storage for a bunch of other stuff that all needed to be moved.

I insulated up to about 10-11 feet and was able to get 8 feet of walls up. I promised my wife I wouldn't get on the tall ladders by myself. I'm going to call in a favor from my snowmobile buddies to come help me finish the top of the walls and ceiling in exchange for snowmobile storage. :bounce:

The tire racks slide in and out on the top rail. I have them extended all the way to fit as many as possible but you can see they are bowing under the weight. I'm going to order 2 more racks and put them under these two as I still have more wheels and tires.

3x sets are for our 3 cars swapping from summer to winter wheels/tires every spring and fall. Can't wait to get all the tires off the floor!

I'm going to order a 60 gallon 2 stage compressor eventually and it will go under the stairs to the right. I'm not sure what I'll do with the cabinets yet. I want to leave this space open for a 4 post lift.

The garage was built in 2010 and the original paint job lasted 10 years. I had the paint cans from original builder so I just had the painter do the same colors for simplicity.

I'm not sure if the original paint is severely faded after 10 years or the paint mixer messed up but I love the darker color.

With the winters there, I'm impressed that the previous job lasted that long. Agreed the darker shade looks great.

The exterior painting is moving along and looks great. It turns out a friend of mine had two of the same tire racks and gave them to me. I put them up yesterday and as dumb as it sounds I feel accomplished finally getting all the wheels and tires off the floor!

The SWAG table came for my portaband. I did a couple cuts on it and it's going to work great for what I need. The floor pedal is a must have!

About a month ago my work was getting rid of some more sheet metal cabinets so I took 4 of them home. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with them but figured I'd find a way to make them useful.

I walked into the workshop and noticed the cabinets that I have been overloading and stacking more stuff on had started coming off the wall.:wtf:

I had planned to paint the cabinets and build a metal base for them since they sit on the frost wall but I guess I'll do that later. (yeah right). For now, I built some quick wooden bases and mounted them to the wall so I could put everything away I had stuffed into the kitchen cabinets.

They are kind of ugly but once I started filling them up I fell in love with them. There is SOOO much more room and I can actually see everything in them. Love them!

My sister, brother n law, and 4 year old nephew came up for the weekend. I taught my nephew how to change the oil and filter in our old RX330. He loved it.

My sister wanted to try welding something so I cut some steel and gave her a tutorial and let her play around. She ended up making a crude candle holder that she took home. ha ha. She loved it and thought it was fun! It is fun!

Looks like you replaced those kitchen cabinets just in time! :scared:
Your nephew might try and elbow you out of that shop in a few years.

I finally had a day to sort through the free tools I found on FB marketplace. I started by separating the rusty from the dirty.

View media item 106427
I put the rusty stuff into the evaporust over night and put the dirty stuff into a degreaser mix.

View media item 106428
The rust came off everything pretty easily, I just wiped everything down with a couple rags after sitting overnight.

I used a foam block and my electric drill to "polish" the sockets up before putting them into the new organizers I picked up at HF.

I started sorting by type, short, long, 6point vs 12 point, etc. Standard on the left and metric on the right. I wonder what this guy did? There are some odd combinations like 7x 12 point 1/2 drive 5/8s sockets and tons of spark plug sockets. I have 9x 1/4 wrenches!

View media item 106430
These are all spark plug sockets...

View media item 106432
I ended up redoing my whole toolbox and combining the best stuff together to make "full" sets. I have tons of 1/2, 9/16, 5/8s wrenches and sockets to last a lifetime. I still have lots to fill in for 12 point sockets but at least I can clearly see what I'm missing now.

All the extra 1/2 drive sockets that are doubled, tripled, quadrupled.

Awesome space! Any chance you can show some detail on the framing, etc, on the second floor pulley system?

Awesome place! I have been trying to convince the wife to get snowmobiles for a while now. I have 3 boys 6/4/2 and think this might be the winter to get a small sled to at least introduce them to it riding around my property down here in Mass. Keep up with the updates! My 30x40 just started and all this stuff lends great ideas for when I get around to finishing it haha!

I can take pictures next time I'm there. I didn't build it so I don't have construction photos. What do you want to see?

The "pulley" system I assume you mean the beam and rope on the outside? That is just for show, it doesn't actually do anything. hah!

$1500 bucks, watch for a deal in the summer for a "120" youth sled. They hold their value and pretty much run forever.

Huge milestone... After 3 years, I finally finished the walls and ceiling doing a 12 hour marathon session with a buddy on Thursday. We counted 113 individual pieces across the walls and ceiling when we were finished. :shocking::shocking:

Last week I calculated that I was 12 sheets short to finish. I couldn't find anything close to matching but I wanted it finished so I bought 12 sheets of this 1/2 sanded from Home Depot. Wow.... No way could I have afforded to do this today. Here is what $500 in plywood looks like in April 2020..:willy_nil:willy_nil

View media item 111701
This plywood weighs about 1/2 as much as the other stuff and it requires more screws to keep it from saging. Kind of ***** but it's a garage, I think it will eventually all wear in together and it's on the ceiling.

Done! :rocker:

A friend of mine called and asked me what kind of compressor he should buy. I told him I want one of those 2 stage Eaton 80G quiet compressors. Then I half jokingly said - "If they'll give us a deal on two, I'll take one too!" 2 days later my buddy texts me and says they knocked $200 off each compressor and they will be shipped to his shop in 5-6 weeks. 6 weeks later they arrived at my buddies place and we saved on shipping as well since he has a commercial loading dock.

Now... We need to transport mine 120 miles north and get it installed under the stairs and wired in. Stay tuned...

I've been working on this air filter box for a few months. I want to try and clean the air in the garage when I'm working out there. Anytime I cut wood or metal you can see all the particles floating around in the light. I can't find where I wrote down all the numbers but I worked out that with the fan on high it should turn over the air in the garage every 2 minutes. I sized the filters based on the fan CFM rating of the fan on high. The fan has 4 speeds so I can turn it on high when I know I'm creating dust.

There will be 2x of these filters in the box.

full

I quickly realized screws are not the way to go for this. It gave me a good excuse to buy a brad nailer. I also glued all the sides together to prevent airleaks.

full

I took the fan apart and mounted it to the end piece of the box with nuts and bolts. I'll extend the wires down so I can mount the original fan switch to the wall.

I don't have a table saw and my wood skillz are lacking but it fits together. :D I'm starting to figure out how to make a bracket so I can hang this thing on the wall.

I welded up the bracket and lagged it into the studs on both walls. I was going to leave the box unpainted but I had moved it so many times with dirty gloves that it didn't look very nice... So I painted it black to match the speaker it's going to sit above.

So there will be a filter on the top and on the bottom. I would have rather put it on the side instead of the bottom but then the box would have been even bigger to get the filters to sit next to each other.

I tried to lift this up there by myself today but no go. This is as far as I got so far... I'll bring help next time I'm in there.... Then I just need to wire it up and try it out. (y)
