White Pegboard vs. Drywall

I've read the wall coverings thread and found a lot of good information. Here's my dilemma. I have a 20'x30'X11' 3 car attached garage. It currently has drywall on 2 walls-left wall and the wall with the 3 doors on it. The other 2 walls-back and right- have brown pegboard from when the house was built in the late 80's. Of course I'm redoing the garage early spring and I'm unsure about the wall coverings. I'm between drywall and pre-painted white pegboard.

Drywall cons:
way harder to install
taping
mudding
sanding
priming
painting
just don't want to deal with it in general. I've done it before and it's a PITA.

Pegboard Cons:
Can't really think of any. It's already prepainted and to put it up I only need screws.

The white pegboard is about $12 for a 4x8 sheet and 1/2" drywall is about $10/sheet at Home Cheapo. After I figure in my time to do the drywall, screws, mud, tape, sandpaper, etc. it'll be more expensive.

Does anyone have any pictures of their/a garage with white pegboard on the walls? I like the current pegboard I have now but it's pretty trashed and I really like the versatility of it. I'll probably want to insulate the garage walls now because I don't think it has insulation which it really needs. At the moment I'm leaning towards the pegboard because it's a ton easier to install.

Thanks guys.

Older pegboard is going to be of better quality than new pegboard I'm betting.

I'd tend to try some high quality oil based paint on the old stuff.

Would you mount your pegboard walls to the studs or float it off the studs with smaller pieces of wood so you can utilize alot more holes?

I would mount it right to the studs. I would be covering a wall that's 30'x11' and one that's 20'x11" so I don't think I need worry about losing a few holes. If I go to hang something on my wall now and there's a stud, I just move it over 2 holes. Also, I like the idea of mounting right to the stud so I can bolt in shelves, cabinets, etc.

Thanks guys.

If you are taking your walls down to bare studs, consider putting in blocking between the studs for added strength for hanging your wall cabinets or whater ever else you might want to hang on the wall. Definitaly insulate if you don't find any when you take the old stuff off.

I would block for the lower cabinets, and use french cleats for the uppers. As for the pegboard, LOOK AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our local borgs all carry 3/16" pegboard (they finally took down the adds for the 1/4" after enough complaints). I have to go to the local Ace hardware stores to search for the white 1/4" (some have brown 1/4" locally).

A friend hates pegboard, but he has a LOT of heavy stuff. So he used painted plywood. Figured out his layout, placed the hangers then hung the plywood. Or you could get a cutter and make your own slatwall, but the fittings tend to be more.

I don't know if the quality got any better, but back when I was in college (late 80's), I worked in the bookstore. We also had a store where we sold sweatshirts and t-shirts with the college name on it. They put slatwall up all over the "Gift" store. It looked cool, but after a few years, it got pretty dingey looking and chipped in quite a few places. It was particle board with I think melamine on it. Unless the stuff got better, I wouldn't consider using it in my garage. Plus there's a lot of grooves to catch dust.

I don't hang anything real heavy. Just extension cords, beach chairs, some racing slicks, etc. We have cabinets for the heavy stuff. I like how the pegboard is now on the wall. It's just ugly because it's brown and it's been beat up.
