I see this sort of thing often. Who buys a Snap On KRL1033 and never puts a tool in it? On my local Craigslist today I see someone claiming they got a KRL1022 for Christmas but "it's too big for my garage". $5000. I may make an offer on the KRL1033.

Some tax scheme probably. Businesses (at least the private types) do it with local used retailers with equipment they've already written off. It's like double dipping and very hard for those gov tax folks to track because the amounts are individually small and private businesses aren't really audited unless it's for valuation (to sell to another business).

My accounting is rusty, though. When I was doing it I saw lots of s(tuff)hit that people did. You don't want to know what the purpose of some of these global charities are...basically a way for rich people to write off their personal living expenses. That's why they all have charities.

A lot of these have definitely been used.

It's just that when some tool polisher fills his clean box with clean Snappy tools and doesn't do anything with them other than take pictures to show off on Garage Journal, it doesn't put any noticeable wear on the box.

A very sweet Lady at my Church just lost her son a couple of months ago, and he had nobody else in his life. He had just up-graded to one of the largest Snap-On boxes I have ever seen, with all kinds of extra chrome on it, and she inherited it all. Who knows what she'll do with it, it barley fits in her tiny garage, but she's happy with it because it was her son's.
She is in her mid 60's I think, and can't even reach the upper box.

I should mention, he was a decorated Vet, wounded in action from Iraq/Afghanistan.

I know a kid that got a great deal on a black SO box cuz he was a student AND it had a small ding on the back. He got it in his garage, took the box off, waxed it, then put the box back on. He decided he doesn't like black, so he has been trying to sell it ever since...
99% unused, never had anything in it...
So what I'm trying to say is, CRAZY people do exist.

It's possible, and sometimes there's valid reasons, but if I was selling one like that, I'd offer a plausible explanation. I'll bet that guy selling the 1033 paid less for the box than what he's trying to sell it for though.

The guy who had $11K to spend, and now has no more money for tools.

I saw a news report recently where thieves stole someone's snap-on truck from a storage facility, took all the tools out, then light the truck on fire.... I'm sure all those eventually will end up on CL or eBay....

Why do you think all professional athletes have "Foundations".

The money he loses on it would more than cover a professional paint job to any color his heart desires.

Im willing to wager thats a dealer or friend of a dealer, Iv discussed this "seller" a few times with some friends

I asked the Rock n' Roll Cab guy last year about them. He claimed they're related to someone who does dealership installs (converting whole service bays to fixed boxes) and buys up techs' boxes they no longer need. No idea if it's true, but sounds plausible enough... then again I've also had email communication with them and they said they were active duty AF, so I don't think that leaves time to be the one doing the installs or picking up boxes either, unless the AF is even cushier than I've stereotypically heard.

Guy buys and sell used tool boxes. Nothing to figure out. I have 10 to 12 in stock most of the time. I'll have some mint and some medium and maybe some rough. I don't have any huge ones, only one triple bay at the moment, but lots of double bay and 3 big carts. Boxes are easy to buy if you have the cash available to sit on them till they sell. I have no connections other then CL and occasionally ebay. Could certainly find more to buy but am out of space to store them. As much as I like nice boxes and tools, it is really just inventory to me, same as all the pressure washers, parts, soap and accessories that I make my living off of.

Except in the rare instances where there's some special circumstance where somebody died, had a house burn down with no insurance the day the bought their toolbox, got injured, told the wife..... no, I don't buy it.

I see this stuff all the time on Kijiji and eBay. "Brand new 1/2 drill, but I lost the box, receipt, and the accessories that came with it". Riiiiight.
Or selling a "brand new" car with 10'000 kms on it....
It's not brand new. It looks brand new. There's a difference.

All that said...who cares. As long as it isn't stolen, great way to get great deals on stuff in good shape. I'd never buy a new $10'000 toolbox.

Waxed a toolbox. Lol.

What's the problem, I wax mine as well. Doesn't matter if its the Craftsman chest's ,The vintage Remline roller or The Snap On KRL1022 or (when its done) the Snap On Taco Cart KR562A. They're investments, much like a car and expensive like a car, I want to keep the paint protected and looking good. Doesn't mean they dont get filthy, they do, but in the end, when they're all cleaned and shiny I look at 'em and smile:thumbup: ( I gotta lay off the late night bud's)

I wax my tool box as well. It came with a wax kit and a microfiber rag and a covee. I'd like to think it'll outlast me. My tool box was a investment so it's cared for as one. The tools inside are a investment as well. Yes it gets dirty during the day at work, but it gets cleaned everyday at the end of work. I use it to earn a living. Nothing wrong with a good looking and clean tool box.

I had neighbor who my wife referred to as metro-******, I just felt he was more interested in fine linen, clothing and I was terrified to bruse his hand when I shook it. But his wife (rodeo queen :)) was a former barrel racer. Both lawyers. She would buy him manly things that would just sit there. Chevy 3500 with overhead camper, 30' boat, and a fully stocked Snap On tool box with hutch and cover, etc, etc, etc. It was simply amazing and sad all at the same time. A moving company showed up one day and loaded it all up. Never did find out where it all went or what happened. But yeah there are unused $11K tool boxes out there...

only real mechanics will appreciate these types of stuff average joe blow wouldnt image spending 11k on a box or even more. But mechanics can write tool boxes off as tax deductions ( investment depreciation). you spend top dollars on your tools wouldnt you want them to be stored nicely and not slapped in 5 drawers all over the place?

i would know because i own a KRL1023 its worth 11k, but hell no i didnt spend 11k for it but indeed its probably my last tool box i ever need because it is huge and more storage space then most typical mechanics need actually.

the extra long drawers on that krl1033 in my opinion isnt great, because it only carries the same as the krl1023. plus you ever try opening a drawer back and forth that has 100 pounds of tools in it?

Still costs money man. You can write off the 500 dollar harbor freight same as the snap on or mac or cornwell or whatever.:lol_hitti "Deductions" have a cost...sure it's tax free spending but it's still spending money whoever does it might or might not have and it has to stay put at work because it's for "business purposes".

Good for you. Maybe now you can move on to wax those other "investments" like the washer/dryer combo, and that new water heater.

Most people here are still missing the tax picture, combined with other reasons to take much less as cash rather than reported income.

Someone controls a small business. The business buys a toolbox, perhaps even at a good discount. The cost is an expense that offsets income. After a suitable waiting period to not have to be produced in an IRS audit (or perhaps you just have a similar old box -- what auditor would know the difference), the toolbox is sold for cash which goes into someone's pocket.

The alternative involves lots of taxes and traceable paperwork. Taking the same $11K might only result in $5 take-home pay.

Throw in some other factors that make under-the-table discounted cash better than reported income. Perhaps partners/investors that get a cut of net profit, or profit over a certain amount. Perhaps alimony or child support which can permanently increase when income goes up a single year. Or college financial aid, which usually requires the parents to max out what they can afford to pay before contributing.

Yeah, maybe he would if this was a washer/dryer forum. Some people take pride in the things they have worked to purchase.
