i've never had misfired mortars that hit anyone... usually just ones that don't have enough bang to get them in the air so they blow just out of the tube or the one that blew in the tube
though there was that time we were being stupid and setting them off without the tubes... nothing keeps you on your toes quite like not knowing which way the thing will go

Normally the mortar would launch up... etc etc... the misfire... kinda lobbed right over my FIL and landed on his head before exploding... thankfully the report landed on the ground separately. He wouldn't come back outside until we were done. He also wore a hat for the rest of the camping trip.
