given how many spanners i now have of the same size i decided it would be a free , neat and quick way to have excess spanners in a place i can get to them if i ever need more than 1 of the same size. i had that many spare 10mms i had to use 2 hangers for them! kept all my better brands in my box along with ratchet spanners and ring spanners. as im not a mechanic by trade, spending money on a bigger box to house excess spanner silly for my needs, who else hangs them up?

its a pointless thread really but im bored

We do this at work.

I'm undecided if I want to go that route at home... but I've got to do something with my huge, single, messy drawer of SAE on the left and metric on the right.:LOL:

Yes and no.
In my detached garage ( workshop), they're all in a toolbox garage.
In the attached garage, I have a basic set of SAE and metric wrenches hanging on a pegboard for quick adjustments to bicycles, lawnmowers, or house things.

I too have nice matching sets on racks in a drawer but I keep extra and mismatched 1/4 - 3/4 inch and similar metric combo wrenches on pegboard hooks above the workbench. No OCD problems here. 😁

I have limited space in my roll around tool chest. I'm a DIYer so I don't need a pro setup. I have one chest drawer commited to my mainline combo wrenches, SAE and metric, regular and ratcheting. The larger sizes over 1" I keep hanging on the pegboard. Long pattern combo wrenches, long and short double offset boxes (standard and deep offset) are all on the pegboard. I have a smaller auxiliary machinist 9-drawer box over to the side where I keep my thin, double open end, mini 'ignition' and flare nut wrenches as well as small tools. Regular sockets of all types are in the chest, impact sockets are in hanging holders on the pegboard. Funny thing, I'll look first at the pegboard and grab a long-pattern wrench before going in the chest for a standard combo. In the end, do whatever serves your personal needs best.

I wish I was home to grab a picture - I've a set hung... horizontal. Take that! 😜

I put one screw in the wall to hold the box end, then lined up and sunk one in the open end.

How many sets does one have?
That makes a difference. The hanging ones were specific to a task (used to hang one in a restaurant for one piece of equipment), or the "loaner" tools (that someone might grab to change a lawn mower blade, wheel, etc.).
Kept the good ones locked up.

Edit: I should add one of my toolboxes is setup for some to actually hang in.

You need to do a better job aligning the screws. And why is one screw a different color?
LOL. i grabed a few screws and ran them in in seconds to see if i wanted them hung or not, i did nearly get the level out but meh. the odd screw is thats just what i grabbed after as its longer and i had a few odd ball sizes under 10mm

I have many sets at home and hang them on a large board with other big hand tools. I like it, I can find the size I need quickly and I can tell when one is missing. Also saves space in the tool box.

At work I have been telling them we need to do this for about a year now. There is a big drawer full of wrenches up to 2.5", all scattered about. You can never find the size you need, there is no good way to organize them, you can't tell when someone didn't put back the size you're looking for and it takes up a huge drawer. Meanwhile there is a large empty wall space right above the toolbox

I'd like to hang the combination wrenches over 1-1/2" just because they take up almost three drawers... haven't found the right spot yet though.

I hang up 3/8" to 3/4" for quick use on the bench, and I think they are Snap-on. In my box, there is a full set of Proto. But, my shop is in my basement, and I don't tool professionally anymore. So, it is just what's handy now.

I got them hanged on nails. The nails for the ones I use commonly are a bit larger so I can pick them up without reading the numbers, I'm just really mad if someone hangs them out of order. I have a larger nail for 10mm, 13mm, 17mm and 19mm, otherwise they're from 6-24mm, the larger ones I keep on a big final nail or in a drawer if they're open ended on both ends.

My last shop had peg board, my new shop...not a square inch of it. I hang every tool that can be hung with a nail. It saves so much space when compared to being locked into the square inch spacing of peg board. And no more pegs coming out and falling off when a tool is removed...

It's hard to see in the photo, but the nails are not in a straight horizontal row. You can get more wrenches in a space by jogging the nails up and down. This brings the wrenches closer together. The smaller sized wrenches are all doubled up on the nails, some even have 3 of that size.

I completely understand the convenience of hanging wrenches and other tools for easy access. But my OCD just doesn’t jive with the aesthetics. It’s always triggering to see a pegboard or such with tools hanging from them.

I prefer tool boxes with organized drawers. But also understand that some have way too many tools to fit in a box and adding boxes isn’t always feasible.

I hang them on these racks and wrench rings with one nail That way if I need to take them somewhere it is easy.

Reminds me of my uncle's workshop:

This thread is timely for me. I just installed some wall control galvanized peg board beind my toolboxes/under my cabinets and I need to decide whether to try and relieve some of the strain in my drawers, or to keep tools in drawers and hang other useful items. The responses so far have been helpful. Keep en coming.

6mm to 25mm / 1/4 to 1” live in Ernst organizers in the box.

26mm to 50 & 1-1/16” to 2” big guys used less often hang on the columns by door to the house. I used bike hooks I straightened out with vise/torch so they’re nice sized studs/lags and can hold a lot of weight. They also double as coat/shop hoodie hangers :)

I hang my cheap wrench set On an A frame cart. I made the hooks to hang them on.
This is the set others use if they want to work in my shop. I save my good sets for personal use. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way sev times.

Ambient humidity here is around 70% and in spring when it rains, the shop goes to 100% for weeks on end. I try not to leave anything exposed to the air.

This thread reminds me of my childhood growing up with my Dad and his work bench.Lots of nails in flat pine boards. He knew where every wrench belonged. When I got using them he let me trace their outline with a pencil so I could put them back.On the bottom,a couple of inches up,so you could sweep under, was a 2/4 standing long width up,with holes drilled, all the punches stayed here. This thread brings a tear to my eye,as I miss my Dad.We grew up on the poor side of town, but the simple lessons and Dad's work bench aren't forgotten.
