I thought I had a full set of sockets, then I bought the harbor freights socket trays. 6 for chrome sae, 6 for chrome metric, 2 for metric impacts, 2 for sae impact, plus a few rails for square drive, flex sockets, and semi deeps.

I love the trays, but found out how many sockets I was missing. I have every craftsman socket but i am about 30 sockets short and have been filling in with other brands as I find the remaining sizes.

There are piles of pics and examples in "show us your tool box" or something rather. There are also a lot of examples in the "new tool arrivals" . . .
People use a variety of different methods from one extreme to another, all loose and scrambled, to FOD requirements, like FOAM (I.E. the new thread which started a couple of days ago "awesome tool organization")....
I really like my hybrid solution Hansen socket trays and craftsman magnetic socket rails...
photo002.jpg

Far is 1/2" drive 11/4 down to 1/2 deep - knock off Hansen
3/8" drive deep 11/4 - 7/32 on Cman magnetic rail
3/8" drive 1/14-7/32 shallow Cman magnetic rail
1/4" drive 9/16-7/32 deep Cman
1/4" drive "" "" shallow cman

Close side
Can't see but right beside the drawer is 1/2" drive deep 32mm-8mm on hansen knock off
right beside that in the same hansen knock off is 32mm-8mm shallow
3/8 deep 19-6mm deep Cman magnetic rail
3/8 shallow 21mm -5.5 mm Cman
1/4" deep 15mm-6mm cman
1/4"shallow 15mm-4mm

all sockets 6 point
have wobble sockets on way in 3/8" drive
need to start collecting 12pt, but am not in a rush.

In the gangbox at work, each drive size has its own handbox.

At home I've got the HF version of Hanson trays and the 3/4 drive stuff lives in a handbox under the bench.

All my "daily driver" rats and extensions for 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2, in a half drawer

All the 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 sockets in a full width 26" drawer on end, with about 1/3 sitting om magnets, and the rest on snap rails or old school metal "cases sitting on magnets.

All the 3/4 drive stuff has it's own box (actually made for large sockets) I just got through pumping new life into, with the sockets on one side and the 3/4 rat, breakers and extensions on the other side. Currently weighs almost 50 lb's be itself.

The 1" rat and extension are currently homeless; The rat is waiting a kit from Proto, (any day now?) as the rat is TOO BIG for any box I have! (and weighs over 12 lbs by itself...)

This is the top tray from my old Craftsman box. I recently got a big box and added my impact sets. Kinda ***** being in the top tray I have to use a step to see into here. Red for SAE blue for metric. Been painting my tools for 35 years. I see harbor freight has copied my color scheme.

I have a full master set form sears, and I use one of their blow plastic boxes to keep them organized. For the hex, torx and extra sets of metric and spline I have. I use craftsman plastic socket rails.

I like taking the whole rail with me, or the whole tray of 1/2, 3/8 or 1/4 when I use them.

Here's my top drawer, metric on the left and inches on the right, randoms towards the back. I don't use many impacts so most is chrome, almost all sockets on magnetic rails, this works for me...

(funny, I see Skulldrinker above has painted his sockets red for SAE and Blue for metric, I used the same logic but opposite for my rails)

I have all my stuff on rails, takes up space but its the best most efficient way I could come up with.

Master set? That the 299 piece set?

If so what case are you using?

Not a full set by any means, but this is how I keep my most commonly used sizes organized.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347605821.461163.jpg

By full set do you mean
1/4" DR 1/8" - 9/16" and 4mm- 15mm
3/8" DR 1/4" - 1" and 6mm - 26mm
1/2" DR 3/8" - 1-1/2" and 10mm - 36mm

If so this would mean Hanson trays wouldn't cover it all. I think that is why OP made this thread.
I have mine on craftsman rails. I need a bigger box so they barley fit in my box and I still have a few sizes to add.

A lot of people with expensive guns that go in expensive cases have the foam custom laser cut. It would be really nice to have something like this done, although it is probably not the best idea if your tool collection is still growing.

I have most of the 299 pc Craftsman set and the 52 pc impact socket set as well as my ratchets and extensions here. I use rails, from HF. Cheap and they get the job done.

I experimented with the flower foam from a hobby store, I had planned to put the sockets in that then vacuum seal it to make trays. Maybe one day but it ended up being a lot of work.

The foam cutouts look great but I just don't want to spend the time to do it.

I used small pieces of 1 inch board and dowels. Each set is on a separate board so I can grab it and take it with me if I want. I put red plugs on unused dowels so I don't spend all day looking for a missing socket that isn't missing. I got lazy and stopped labeling the boards - maybe one day I'll finish it, or remove what I got done so its not as obvious that I got lazy lol

HaroRider - Those HF torgue wrenches I think are great. I'm no mechanic and dont use them everyday, but i have done a ton of engine/transmission work with them and never had a problem with them. For the price for the DIY/home mechanic they are great. I have all 3 (1/4 in,3/8 ft, 1/2 ft). Great purchase when you can get them for 9.99 each during a sale.

I have yet to use the 1/4" or the 1/2" but the 3/4" and 1/2" torque wrenches work very well, I had a friend try to prove that they were off and confirmed my 3/4" was off by almost 2 lbs at 175 lb setting. All things concidered you cant beat the 1/4", 3/8" & 1/2" torques for $10 each, the 3/4" is still a great deal at just under $80.

Metric only I never use standard... Also impact swivels 3/8 on far right and 1/4 on mag rail back right.

top box in my service truck only has 3/8" & 1/2" dr.
metal trays, MTS mag holders, and SO metal rails
1/4" & 3/4" dr stuff is in another compartment
1/4" dr all stays together in a repurposed blow molded box,
3/4" dr sockets, ratchet head, and breaker bar head, are all in acrobins

home box has some hansens, metal trays, SO metal rails, quite a few sockets without a means of support, 1/4" dr set stays in it's blow molded case in the ratchet drawer.

work boxes dont change much, home boxes get shifted around and reorganized, as i pick up more stuff.

I don't have double sizes in 12 and 6 points. I do love the Hansen trays. My sockets have never been so organized and I like how I can take a whole tray or more out of my main box.

My 3/4" drives are big and heavy enough to stand by themselves and not move around.

If I were to do rails, I would go with the Ernst. See the post by caspian65 with his Ernst.

Here's mine - not nearly complete (but I'm working on it) and entirely out of room without major re-organization  I've actually never been happy with this drawer, but I'm not sure what to do about it. BTW - 95% of everything you see is Snap-On.

I haven't seen a setup quite like mine, so I'll show it off. The rails are the plastic ones from Cman or HF. The sockets are nearly all Cman with a few SK mixed in. It covers nearly every size of each drive, but I don't have the full set of both 6 and 12 point. Impacts and 3/4" are in a different drawer.
