I'm looking at buying a small acreage (3.5 acres) which has a nice 24x26 attached garage, and a detached 16x24 garage.

I have two kids under two and I am pretty sure the attached garage will soon be filled up with bicycles, basketballs, strollers etc in addition to our two cars.

I was thinking that the detached garage would make a nice shop where I could store all my tools and a project vehicle.

My question is:
What tools or supplies (oil + filters etc) would you keep in the "family garage" and what would you keep in the man cave?

I was thinking of keeping the family garage as minimal as possible ie anything up to an oil change ie washer fluid and oil / filters / catchpan I *may* keep in the attached garage along with a small bench and some screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers for fixing the odd part from the house or kids toy without having to go into the shop?

Or do you keep almost everything in the attached (fairly large) and keep the detached for "project storage".

I have my lathe and foundry setup (furnace, moulding bench etc) I would certainly like to have seperate in a "shop" as well as some woodworking tools (mitre/table saw etc) but was wondering more about my rolling cabinets and other tools etc. I guess it comes to convenience vs family safety and cleanlieness.

Let me know what you guys do and what you like/don't like about your arrangements!

I know, maybe neurotic questions, but I'm stuck at work dreaming of moving out of the city.

I would keep the woodworking tools up at the house and the metalworking stuff out in the shop. The 2 dont mix well anyways sawdust is mighty flamable :D.

I have a 20x28 attached garage and a 24x24 detached garage. The attached is mainly for housing my Goldwing and the Wifes 07 Mustang GT Convertible. I also have alot of built in shelves for storage and a built in table and pegboard area for the wife's gardening stuff! The detached is ALL MINE!!! Half is setup with 2 work bench's and other cool stuff. The other half is of course where I work on the vehicles. Im righ now in the process off insulating and walling it up! Ordered a Split Heat Pump system yesterday and will be installing soon. I do all my vehicle work in the detached garage!!! Hopefully be posting pic's soon of the final renovation!

I have a 24' X 24' detached (wifeys) and a 24' X 30' detached mine. We used to share and they are pretty close to each other. I still store some of my **** in hers that I use rarely.

I am still trying to figure this out myself. i keep going in the old garage looking for stuff that I have moved (creature of habit) anyway, I mostly keep my most used stuff in my shop and less used stuff and paint in the other.

All my yard tools and lawnmowers are stored in a little shed I built onto the rear of my garage....& I don't have a family garage...nothing except my automotive stuff is allowed in my garage though I have given my wife part of the upstairs of the garage to store her stuff!

I have a 20x20 woodworking room/shop that also houses my office as part of my garage.

For our next project, we're going to build a potting shed for SWMBO.

Well, because I'm a complete idiot, I have a 32x40 shop and a 2 car garage, and when I need to work on my '62 Suburban and the Plymouth Duster, it goes in the house garage because the shop is full!

Go with as big a shop as you can, and get a shed to put all the lawn/garden/bikes/etc. in. I'm going to build a shed out behind my shop specifically for the lawn and garden stuff.

I have separate RV storage, car storage and work shop plus an exercise room. The only thing in my attached garage is my wife's Porsche and her van.

House garage keeps the cars and a refrigerator and a small set of wall cabinets. All garden tols are in a shed. All other car stuff is in my 28x36 separate garage. In the summer we usually have the house garage open when we are home and I don't like stuff showing from the street.

I have a small 16x20 detached shop where I keep the metal cutting machines. It keeps the milling and lathe swarf out fo the main garage and the house -- Wifey is way happier that way.

^^^^^^*******!

Me and Kevin are leading mirror-lives....

I have a 20x24 attached and a 24x40 shop. The tools I keep in the attached are for home repairs, esp. in winter when I don't want to run out to the shop to get what I need fore a leak, door repair, etc. So I keep plumbing supply, wood work stuff, some painting supply, etc. in there.

No matter what, I "Just Say NO" to garden tools and kids bikes near my cars. Period. For that I have a plastic Garden Shed. That way the kids can't scratch the cars and the dirt/grass clippings aren't all over my shops.

My shop is like a surgical suite:thumbup: and some of my cars are show-quality, so it's off-limits tothe boys - esp. as they are so young....but I know (if they're anything like me:bounce:) their ability to wreack havock around cars will grow! As the attached garage also has a pit, they can work on their stuff in there.

See what you started being bored at work?!!:lol_hitti:beer:
