Who has plans for NOOB?

I am a noob here. I just found this incredible site. I want to build a detatched garage around 30 by 40 on my property.

Where can I get some cheap or free blueprints? I would hate to spend $$$ on an architect around here for something so simple.

I am located in NY State.

I am also in NYS. When I built my building, I got some plans from 84 Lumber. I did not eventually use them, but they were available. The plans were not stamped by a NYS licensed architect or engineer, but they were available. Each municipality interprets the need for a stamp a little differently, so you should check whether they will require a stamp on the plans. NYS Education Law prohibits a design professional from stamping plans not drawn by them or under their supervision, so if you need stamped plans you will have to have it drawn.
Hint: If your building costs less than $20,000, you have a better chance of getting a permit without a stamp. I put up my building for less than that, then waited a year to do the floor and finish the inside.

But I googled "Free garage plans". The results kept me busy for an hour.

IMHO, There IS value in having an artchitect work on your prints, especially one who is familiar with your local building codes and the peculiarities of your local building/planning dept. If the design is simple, then you shouldn't be looking at an outrageous amount of money. Remember that the architect is providing more than just the prints; he is providing the benefits of his experience. You have to consider the "cost" of doing a lot of back-and-forth with your local building/planning department, should you decide to go it alone...depending on where you live, you can either be in for a wonderful, hassle-free experience, or a nightmare.

Having an architect who knows all of the "ins and outs" can save you a LOT of grief...In my case, my architect is a semi-retired guy who actually used to work for the city's building/planning dept., and his experience has been invaluable.
