Who keeps two sets of different quality tools at the same location?

Over the years as I built up my tool collection I started realizing that I had my initial starter tools which were lower end stuff, while my newer additions are higher end tools. Hence what I find myself doing is picking which tool to use based upon how nice the car is I’m working on. If I’m doing work on a 90’s model Jeep that’s leaking, rusted, and dirty then I pull out my older cheaper ratchets and pliers. Where as if I’m working on a 08 Audi then I pull out the Koken and Gedore tools. I just can’t see myself using nice tools on older, trashed cars, does anyone else do this too?

nope ..... for the most part my best stuff is at work, the home stuff is slightly lesser quality, or older used stuff, and the cheapest stuff that will still work is moved to the trucks just in case bag. There are some exceptions to that of course.

The more rusty and crusty the car the better the ratchet I reach for. I have had the cheap ones break or slip and hitting my knuckles on a rusted out fender is no fun.

No. It doesn't matter to me what I'm working on. My wrenches don't care how dirty they get or how much the car costs. If anything, POS cars can require the quality stuff since working on them can be a real ***** due to rust and neglect.

I also move the lesser quality stuff home. When I upgrade the home/road tools, the cheapest stuff gets given to friends.

No.
But then, I don't wax my tools or tool box regularly either.

I'm funny that way--I just have tools, and use them to work on things.

my cheap **** stays in the house for quick jobs on stuff inside, when i don't feel like going outback to the garage.. my better stuff is arranged nicely in the garage, for more involved jobs generally outside. Some chinese junk airtools in the basement for use with my older smaller compressor, and the CP and Craftsman air stuff in the roll-away to use with the 50 gal compressor.

When I was working as a paid wrench I had two sets, one craftsman at home and better at work but now I just combined it all and gave the cheaper dupes to my dad. Life is too short and space too precious to keep cheap tools around. Tho sometimes I wish I had a cheap set of tools for the junkyard. One of these days.

best tools are at work. as i get nicer stuff, old comes home. eventually i want my home box to be like my work box. i hate being limited at home b/c i don't have the right tool. so that helps promote the work box upgrade.

Everything in my tool cart is also in the main toolbox. They're are way more tools in the main toolbox, but the toolcart is all doubles. I usually keep the cart near the front of the garage for working on the Mustang and the main toolbox is back next to the work bench.

I have duplicates of different quality but the good stuff is in my tool bag to use regularly and the lesser stuf is in a chest in the van. It comes out when I loose one of my regular use tools and need a back up.

I sometimes grab the cheap tool kinda hoping it will junk out on me so I can toss it if it's a dup. No such luck, haven't tossed even a socket for almost a year.

i gave all the junk away to my brother awhile ago. like others said, on older stuff because of rust and wear you need a good tool that wont let you down. ive broken who knows ho many craftsman ratchets and even cheaper chinese ones. ive completely given up and gone with snap on years ago its the only way if your doing serious wrenching
