Who made this vice?

It was my granddads. No idea on the age or make.

It is at least 60's i think, I just cleaned it so that is why it is nice and shiny

T-shape of jaws, chrome cylinder-style handle knob, the little anvil beak, bent sheet-metal style screw slide/cover, and sharp square style corners/style all lean to a more modern style. Might be 20 years old or something, but still a modern style. Flip it on it's side and look at the bottom/under side of the swivel base. Could always be wrong - but if I seen that at a yard sale, I would assume to see Japan, Taiwan, etc. under it when I flipped it over.

With the exception of the beak on the rear of the anvil the lines on the vise sort of look like some European manufactured vises such as old Matador vises, or some manufactured in Spain. The beak is out of place though.

I had a 4" on my bench up until the first of this year. I bought it at Northern Tool in the 80's. I had another 8" jaw one built exactly the same just bigger. For fun I cleaned & painted and sold on CL for $50.00
I have to admit I just became a "Viseaholic" this year. I am up to around 40 good old American made vises now.

With a horn like that and from the 80s, it is most likely Taiwan made. I have a cheap 4" (no horn but 4 mounting ears) I bought from Western Auto in '82 or '83 and it is Japan made. No COO markings but I recall noticing that on the box. Was already seeing cheap Taiwan tools beginning to replace cheap Jap tools and a few years later no more "cheap Jap", only "quality Japanese".

Anyway sometime, I guess, around 2000-2005, the manufacture of the OP's style of vise was moved to China.

talked to my dad, He remembered it was from the mid 70's from a local tool store in Asheville NC.
