I have an OLD Sears 220v compresser thats 15 gallons and pretty weak now.

I no longer see any 220v compreesers in their catalog that are "laydown" models?

Ive looked at HD and Lowes as well and nobody carries them?

All the weaker ones are 110v and oiless (which are REAL loud).

Who makes a decent priced , reliable, 220v compressor anymore?

thanks,
Doug

All the major manufacturers make 240V (what you refer to as 220v) compressors. You may not see them on the floor for display in places like Home Depot, etc., but they're made.

Ingersoll Rand
Quincy
Craftsman
Eaton
BelAire
etc.

Most of the higher end models are either.....I know when I was shopping around for them that is about all I found. I ended up buying a 5hp 30 gallon Sanborn belt drive. It runs off of 120 right from the store, but by switching a few nuts and wire it runs 240.

There are WAY more brands out there than any one of us can possibly recite... I take it your looking for something in the range of 5hp 220 right? If your looking to buy one, give us your requirements and budget and we can help narrow things down for ya... Id say collectivly, the board has had experience with almost every brand out there

Because they have been able to make motors more and more "efficient" in the last few years, current draw for higher HP rated motors has been less and acceptable for 120V usage. As stated above, a lot of motors can be rewired for 240V usage. And... you can always replace the motor with one that can be rewired for 240V.

Hey all,
my requirements are as follows-
the compresser needs to run a die grinder, impact wrench, ratchets, and thats it.

Pretty easy requiremnts but the fab tool of choice(die grinder) gets used alot. I'll probably need a 7-10cfm range @ 90psi.

I could get a 110v anywhere BUT they run hot, and constantly refill during jobs and are really noisy(oiless)

My current Sears unit(circa 1980) runs good and you can even still get rebuild kits for it, but the tank is too small, is always refilling and its only a 2HP.

Ive already got the outlet for 220v over to the area (one for the compressor, one for the MIG)

I'd like a laydown unit since I can't fit a stand up unit anywhere and still have room for all the other **** we have.
At least the laydown can still fit under the workbench.

thanks,
Doug

Most 220 horizontal tank units are 60 gallon, so its still going to be pretty damn big, and if your working on soemthing really small and it kicks on right at your feet, id imagine it would scare the **** out of you hahaha

If your using a grinder Id say look in the 15cfm range...

The million dollar question is how much are you looking to spend?
