In all honesty just curious. Usually a snap on fanboy, a lot of my tools I'll only go to snap on for. But I didn't wanna pay their price for a 1/2 set of impact sockets so I bought Matco adv. absolutely love them, and I have never come close to rounding a fastener off. Just was wondering who makes them. I believe it is sunex. Seriously buy these I believe they are on par with Matcos hardline impact sockets

That style isn't as durable as the new snap-on design. The crimp rings that hold the pin in place tend to wear out and come off. The new style snappy uses a square similar to a wobbler extension with no pin or ring.

For non professional use, they'll likely last forever...but used everyday, I've warrantied plenty.

I use them professionally, do you mean the just the swivels? I have snap on swivels. Stuff like that is worth the extra money.

Yeah..the swivels. Old snappy and these sunax sockets pictures have a cross pin and then that ring is slid over and crimped on top and bottom to hold the pin in place...the rings wear out from rubbing against stuff in tight quarters. The newer snappy ones don't have this problem.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1464707102.886824.jpg
These are about done

New style snap on...pin is welded in place, no ring

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1464707231.711631.jpg

Mac uses the square...I was mistaken

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1464707294.103560.jpg

Edit: I'll add that I dislike the Mac style sockets...they don't articulate as smoothly as the single pin style, even though by design they should be orders of magnitude stiffer/stronger.

I just bought a set of 1/2" drive swivel impacts from HF...they use the pin, but instead of a crimp ring they use a spring ring with 3-4 turns in it. Made in Taiwan. If jammed in a tight spot, the spring is toast I imagine. At that point I'll drill a counterbore and weld the pins I guess.

It's a guess, period. Yes they are produced in Taiwan, but by which actual company produces them is just speculation. There are several top quality tool forging companies in Taiwan and many formulations of tool steels that are available. My guess is no guess. I do agree that the Matco ADV socket line is a very good tool though. I have a few sets and they are hard to beat!

I have a few of the regular matco 3/8 swivels and honestly hate them. I've had a few come apart at the worst times. the slop at the swivel is way excessive. I have not tried the adv but as of late i've been buying more and more matco since my snappy guy is a loser that never shows up.

If you compare a 1/2 driver impact socket from ADV to sunex it isn't the same, unless they have more than one company making them I don't think it's sunex. I think it's whomever makes gearwrench impact sockets

Although it could be sunex but to matcos specifications.

The Matco swivel impacts are pretty poor, after they came out with the new pinless design, the base piece is powder metal to reduce costs. Was using them with my Milwaukee 3/8 impact and in the light you saw metal dust flying all over the place.

It's either sunex or gray pneumatic both are great quality

And I will have to say the pinless design of Matco swivels are the best imo

Matco 10 piece metric 3/8" swivel impact socket set $435
Sunex 10 piece metric 3/8" swivel impact socket set $64
But I can't find pinless Sunex swivel impacts. So can we say Sunex still make them for Matco?

Both carry lifetime warranties. Now that tool trucks carry Sunex, pinless or not, is it still worth paying that extra $300+ for their "no frills, we come to you" warranty fee? I've never bought anything off a truck, but that's what people say the inflated price covers. If they are indeed the same, that's ridiculous. $435 for 10 sockets. That's insane. Also, I have Sunex and Snap On impact socket sets. Can't see any difference in looks or performance. :dunno: I know snappy makes their own however...

You are comparing the wrong Matco sockets, the ADV line is comparable to the Sunex.

My mistake. The pinless thing is what threw me off when I originally began the comparison. So, $234 compared to $64. Either way, is it still worth paying the price difference?

I don't think it's worth the difference in price, unless you are extremely abusive on swivels. I bought a few adv socket sets 7 years ago, before I figured out they were sunex. After that, I just got sunex sets. Even if I break one, it's a few bucks on tool topia and I'd just throw them on my next order. The only socket I've broken was a 12pt 12mm 1/2 drive driveline socket, and that was after numerous ford drive shafts and axle shaft bolts. I have all their swivels, from 1/4 all the way to 1/2. I actually brought my snap ons of the same design home. I know matcos pinless sockets are supposed to be the cats ***, but I can't bring myself to pay for them.

I agree I'd buy the Sunex before buying the ADV. I bought the Armstrong pinless which were about 60% the cost of Matco's but they are the same thing.

And even cheaper for the Craftsman Industrial pinless version.

I got 3/8" SAE and Metric sets for $150 total.

I still usually grab my Sunex set first for no particular reason though.

I just compared a 3/8 drive 19 mm deep sunnex and a matco adv and they are not the same. The sunnex is totally flat on the bottom and the adv is recessed where the drive square is.

Just read an old thread which said PTP - Professional Tool Products is the company importing Taiwan made products for Matco and Cornwell. Sunex being the brand for the ADV line.

Now I wonder, who makes the Silver Eagle line of impact sockets?

I agree I see the same thing. Unless they are cutting corners or making them "better" for Matco.
