The snap-on ph3050 is the cats meow. Have had mine for probably 7 years. Had to have it rebuilt one time. I have the $50 ir short barrel as well its nice for extremly light duty work but pretty useless for anything else.

There's a twist throttle at the air inlet. The $50 IR isn't real good at anything except making an annoying buzzing noise. I'd take a chance on the Aircat first...

• Variable speed soft touch trigger provides featherability for greater control
• 4 position built in air regulator varies power for different applications

Don't know what models you're looking at, but make sure to go with a long barrel. Had my Matco branded kit for 5 years or so now, and it still will knock loose anything I throw at it.

It may be turned up already.

The 3050 has 4 power settings. You adjust the gun by turning the red knob just above the air inlet. It has a detent for each power setting. When you look at the knob you will see it has 1 line for power setting 1, 2 lines for power setting 2, etc.

I just ran out to my shop and took a pic for you.

Strongest ?

CP717

Requires .498-Inch diameter chisel shank tool in order to handle the extra power.

Another thumbs up for the snapon - some people at the shop I work at have mac and matco versions, but they don't seem to have the kick the snap on super duty does. I love that thing - hate the noise, but love how effective they are, one of the must haves really.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe any air tool has a lifetime warranty.

I bought mine rebuilt out of the bargain bin in the back of the truck, and it works great. Someone must have traded it in for a new one, which is an option.

I'm a cheap guy, so I always look in the bargain bin. Heck my first real roll away tool box was a trade from earlier that day. The Snap On dealer still had in the truck when he showed up at our shop. Still works great after 29 years.

Are air hammers rated to see which is strongest similar to torque for impacts

There's no reason why they shouldn't be. SDS rotary hammers are rated in impact energy (Joules), but I have not seen a similar rating for comparison of air hammers.

I have never seen any ratings on them, but a longer stroke and FEWER blows per minutes are definitely in the right direction.

CP717 : 1,800 blows per minute; 2.69" stroke; 3.13 cfm average air consumption

PH3050 : 2,500 blows per minute; 3.0" stroke; 1.8 cfm free speed

While the PH3050 has a longer stroke, its higher blows per minute tell me that piston has LESS WEIGHT which is really the most important (and unpublished) specification.

The CP7150 (import version of the old CP715) is a good reasonably priced compromise and it uses .401 bits.

Yep, our shop bought one just for removing stuck wheel bearing hubs. Most times it knocks em right out.

I really could have used this today. Soaked wheel bearings in penetrating oil all last night, didn't budge this morning. Had to hit them with a sledgehammer for an hour

CP 717 or the identical (made in the same factory) Astro Pneumatic. You need .498 chisels but it you really want to pound on something this gets it done.

maybe use a bigger hammer next time...:bounce:

if wailing away for an hour with a sledgehammer is what it took to knock it loose, it's doubtful an air hammer would have helped much....

Very true, but my air hammer didn't budge it at all (doubt any would). It's a real old snap on ph2050 that I bought for 10 bucks including the bits, so I jumped on it but it's starting to fall apart.

The rating is in joules per blow (or energy). You'll find this on better air hammers, but also on SDS drills and the like as a reasonably fair point of comparison (like torque).

Isn't the CP 717 made in Japan and the Astro in Taiwan? Where did you get your info that they are made in the same factory?

Nope they don't. Each brand uses a different a thread although their might be some crossover.

It's an Ajax .498 Chuck that came off an old cp gun. I spent weeks back and forth trying to find the proper nylon insert eventually Ajax sent it to me directly for free because no one in the country had one.

Call up Ajax and ask for Larry he should be able to get you all of the info.

They used to be made in Japan, they've been Taiwan for quite a few years now. But you can still find Japan ones on ebay.

I know AP repairs CP 717's, and stock parts. And I believe Astro made a comment or alluded to in a previous thread they are made in the same spot.
