Hi guys
Who makes the best garage floor epoxy for a garage floor. I will be detailing cars in it so it will see water and cleaning products. Also should I put a epoxy clear coat over it. Do they sell one that will not be slippery?

what a loaded question....

FYI, if the space has been used already for detailing, it's most likely has silicone contamination. An aggressive prep, some degreasing and an oil stop primer might be in order. If silicone used there before, you'll need to do an aggregate type floor, meaning heavily textured, to hide the warping that it will do to the epoxy.

Don't worry about which epoxy is best but rather who will approach and properly apply the correct system in your space.

IN my research of epoxy, there are several large, successful players who seem to understand what needs to be done in prep work and have a quality product that a good DIYer can apply. Then there are paint manufacturers who jump in with something similar to "epoxy", yet they know nothing about concrete or surfaces or the prep needed. Then there is paint....just slap it on and go to work.

The reality is that ANY epoxy work, be it garage floor or boats (most of my experience) is in the prep work and using quality products, correctly mixing, and then applying the epoxy correctly.

Poor prep will render the best coatings useless, or worse, a failed setup and require additional work to remove correctly. Then start over with your install. Good epoxy is not inexpensive.

Look at what your budget is, the quality of the floor as you look at it today and what will be needed to prepare it, correctly. Then do your research or talk with one of the suppliers who are here day in and day out. Stay away from the box store paint and "epoxy kits"....

Best of luck in what you decide.

Agree,

The secret is in the prep. For this application make sure you use a system that also offers a good 2-part epoxy primer, 100% solids epoxy, and a high performance urethane topcoat with non skid additive. There are a lot of offerings, and yes, stay away from anything sold at a home center or hardware store.

Prep is key, BUT on other key is check the chemical resistance and the chemicals used in your cleaning products. Getting a floor designed to resist the chemicals that you use day in and day out is so often overlooked.
