This hammer belongs to buddy at work and I fell in love with it. I am now on a quest to find one, but I cant find one like it anywhere. I have never seen one with such a long front section. He told me he bought about 10 years ago off our matco tool guy. But it does not look like the matco ball peens available today. Its at least a 40oz but more likely a 48oz.

For only being 10 years old it must have been made from cheese.

For having 10 years of daily abuse working on heavy equipment, I think its done fairly well. I am no expert but I googled 3lb cheese hammer and it doesn't appear to be the original manufacturer. Thankyou though for your valuable and insightful contribution to this thread.

Google for 3 lb Ball Peen or 48 oz. Ball Peen (Or Ballpeen...)

Not every hammer MFG made them that big and a lot of them are re-branded from other manufacturers.

Stanley tools and Vaughan both make 48oz. ball pein hammers. The Stanley tools wood handled hammer is item #54-048. Amazon has dimensions listed as 16.1x12.1x5 inches, they don't make sense unless the 16.1 and 5 are actually centimeters which look to fit well. The Vaughan ball pein is item #TC848. Vaughan's website doesn't list dimensions. There's a 48oz Blue point ball head on ebay right now that looks similar. Head lenghth is listed at 5 3/4" long with a face is listed at about 1 3/4". Ebay item is #221182174898. If it was USA made though I would probably just guess Vaughan as OEM.

That is one of the best replies I have ever read. I was also thinking Vaughan. I found no pertinent info when searching for Matco manufacturers from ten years ago. That does seem to have a longer front face than most of the ones I am finding.

These guys will get you the dimensions so you can confirm it is similar to the one you like.

Mumme does make a ball pein hammer they refer to as "Normalized". The description is "Head is forged from high-tensile steel then normalized to give a softer face that is less likely to chip." "Normalized striking faces both have hardnesses below 20HRC". Don't know what you've been hitting, but a softer face on the hammer might explain it's condition. Mumme Products also makes a normal hardness version that should be more durable. Sorry I_van_putski and honcho if that's what you were referring to.

^^^This is funny. ^^^

I've never once typed out those three letters, and I refuse to, but I actually laughed out loud.

I've got a 40oz. PLUMB wood handled BP that has a pretty long face section.

It's far from new so you might want to give a look to that brand as well.
