What's throwing me for a loop is that receipt looks like a dealer's receipt too.

How the heck did you pull that off?

I found it in the "bin tools" slot, and took it up to one of the counter girls. I offered $4, but she laughed and said she was only going to ask $1.50. I said, "Aww, what the heck? For a dollar and a half, I'll find a use for it!"

The "bin tools" slot from where? Man, it's like pulling teeth to get any information out of you.

Didn't mean to be evasive.
The local pawn shops in Tucson are sporadic when it comes to tools, and they usually pull out the S-O and Craftsman and put them behind locked glass. All the rest of the stuff they get try just dump into these big plastic bins and they're called "bin tools". Since I've gone in all these places for years, the people know me, and I usually get stuff cheap.
But this has got to be the top one or two best finds ever.

I got some blu rays at a pawn shop last week. 3 for 10. Not bad at all. Didn't have any hand tools that I was interested in, smaller shop. Not a big pawn person, honestly. Tools aren't really in great condition once they get there.

Ha-ha, I've also been hunting DVD's while at the pawn shops, and getting them for $1 each - even 2-disk special editions!

I bought five of those a few years ago from the "Dollar Box" at a pawn shop. It was a set minus one wrench (9/16" IIRC). I buy stuff there regularly so I took them to the manager and said I found them in the dollar box, thinking it was an error. He just laughed and said, "Take 'em!" Five SO wrenches for five bucks--2008 date code, like new. You just never know . . .

Good score on the wrench, but I'm more jealous of the tax rate. It's 13% here, gas is $5.50 a gallon. and milk is almost $8 a gallon. Good 'ole socialist Canada!

9 times out of 10 Snap-On is expensive, you're correct. I picked this socket up for $2 at a yard sale iirc and these pliers for $1. I have actually used the socket a few times at work, so it is tucked in with my sk 3/8 set.

The pliers are sweethearts. Easily the best built pair of slip joint pliers I have ever handled. They are just rebadged, made by the Forged Steel Products Company. 5.5" long.

Yeah, yeah, the old " too much oil money, not enough booze" conundrum. Wish I had them problems. But I bought my house for $20,000 I don't think that will buy an 8'x10' shed out there

Hey, you got me on that one. It's a give and take for sure.

I bought my 3/8 long matco green plastic handle ratchet at "us pawn (chain of pawn shops)" for a buck. love the way their employees don't care, as long as they get their paycheck...

WOW, on the prices and tax rate in Canada:eyecrazy:

Wow on the SO purchases Bonneyman and beekeeper.:rocker:

And deals are out there is you look hard enough. At least in the populated areas. I feel sorry for guys who live in the boonies as far as tool buying goes. But you don't have traffic jams do deal with:3gears:

Yea, but who buys one random wrench?
Most of us buy wrench sets, not odds and ends.
So, it's sort of useless b/c either you already have one,
or want an entire set (like ratcheting)
Buying one off is silly.

At 10 cents a mm you can afford to have a few extras to grind down for special apps or just as spares.

I tend to disagree and I come at this from many angles. I am a tool user, a tool reseller and I also happen to be frugal.

As a tool reseller, I run into at least 2 type of people. One are the folks who have to have nice complete matching sets. I get the impression you are like that. And that is fine for you. Then there is the other folks who want to save money and are willing to wait for the deal and build a set over time.

Being frugal, for my personal tools, I have bought cheap sets early in my career and have replaced them with better quality over time on the cheap. If you were to look at the wrenches on my pegboard at the bench, I probably have at least 10 different brands in SAE. Note, I have at least 2 of each size. I could care less about matching sets, I have been upgrading quality on the cheap for years. Note, I don't wrench full time though it is part of my business. And, I wouldn't call it ********* wrenching where tools had to be top notch to get the job done. Most of the time, a cheap *** Chicrap tool will work. Better quality USA tools make it nicer and that is where I have headed.

One benefit of having different brands is you can identify a wrench size by its looks. Makes it quicker to find the size you want. Especially works well in my road box where the wrenches are stored in a small compartment.

My point being, not all folks buy in sets. Especially expensive sets. Nothing wrong if that is what you want. Not all folks feel that way.

Now as far as a reseller goes. I sell a lot of single wrenches to folks who have lost one. I sell at 50% of retail. Normally works out good for buyer and seller. So I buy a lot of broken sets at auctions.

One thing that sells well for me is big size individual SO wrenches. Over 1 inch. They are darn pricey and guys rarely buy the set that goes up to 2 inch. But they will buy a wrench or 2 every month or so to fill out a set as they become available.

Don't look down on the guy who buys a SO wrench one at a time.

So if you found one individual snap on tool, such as a socket, at a yard sale for $2...would you just pass on it?

I couldn't say no, but then again...I would buy any premium usa made socket, it wouldn't necessarily have to be snap-on. I live very close to where Cornwell tools are made and also an older Bonney factory, but interestingly don't see a lot of them used.
