Hello,

I’ve been searching and can’t find what I had found. I swear I read somewhere (here, toolguyd?) that ikea buys their butcher blocks from an American company and it was cheaper to get direct and they had more options.

Hoping the brain trust here can help me, I’ve hit a dead end searching.

John Boos is probably one of the best known...

They do carry a "workbench" grade of top- instead of the "prudy ****" you put in the kitchen.

Ikea BB is very respectable in quality & price.
keep in mind that it is not solid but rather about a 5 mil laminate
the end caps are very impressive too.

They have both solid and veneer. Like the other poster I have solid wood butcher block from Ikea purchased in the past few years.

The butcher block top I purchased from IKEA is actual wood, not a veneer.
The label on the box that mine was shipped to me in said it was a product of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I like Ikea butcher blocks, or at least I have, they change every now and then, but I don't have a clue as to where they're made or who makes them.

Ikea does have some USA-made products, but I don't remember reading about where any of them (butcher blocks included) are sourced from.

I don't think it's Bally or Boos, given the sizing (e.g. 1-1/8" when I last checked) and materials.

Maybe they used to be sourced from one of those makers, but the outgoing products 2 years ago were thinner (1-1/8" vs. 1-1/2"). A few years ago, at least some were thicker.

The same is true of the current solid wood countertop I can find - Hammerp in oak (1-1/8"). https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20274961/

Makes sense. Price stays the same, size gets smaller.

Ikea was 1 1/8" last time I looked and was finger jointed all the way through.
I just got a length of 2 1/2" walnut Butcher Block from Armani Woodworking at about 165.00 a foot. Nice stuff though.

If you want something bullet proof search craigslist fo bowling alley pieces. I just built a 7 foot kitchen island out of a maple section. 2 1/2 in thick and solid as can be. Another source is to locate a shop the does commercial trailer repair. They use oak for the trailer floors. Both are strong as iron.

Keep in mind that bowling alley lanes are only maple for the first few feet where the balls land. Also, they’re loaded with nails inside.

Homedepot has 1.5" thick butcher block online in a few different types of wood. I just bought one for my kitchen island as was really impressed with it. You have to do the final sanding and sealing.
