Whole house generator temporary 20lb propane tank setup for testing?

My Dad gave me a Generac 20KW generator that the engine won't start. I'd like to see if I can get the engine running off a portable propane cylinder before I go through the trouble of getting the transfer switch and inlet box as well as the trouble to install the system. Has anyone done this? I haven't seen the generator yet so I don't know what size hose / connector I will need. Since it's a 20kw unit I suspect the larger the better. I know the electrical part of the unit works, I just need to get the engine running. Thanks

It probably will not run on a BBQ sized LP tank. I forget, but a 20k is something like 300,000 BTU and a 20 pound tank can only provide around 50,000 BTU.

You probably can do some testing but the propane tank will freeze up pretty quick flowing that much. It won't be full demand on your testing so you will also have that going for you. Forklift style tank should support this a bit better if you really want to get hours on it before wiring it in - you are only looking at 30-40hp on the engine side to be running 20kW
