I just wanted to share an experience I had with these guys. I ordered a number of items via the web (mostly from their clearance section). I got an email saying that about half of the items I ordered were not available (or in one case could be ordered for a higher price).

I got a bit mad and asked to cancel my entire order (I had been at a funeral all morning of lady who died way too young and I was in a bad mood). They did and - so far I have not seen anything bad from them on my credit card.

Pros:
Nice people
List USA made on web site when it's known about an item
They have a few physical stores that you can go to

Cons:
They don't know what they have in stock at all times and they don't appear to care enough about the customer to get inventory right (epically regarding clearance items).
Some of their prices are great, but some can be beat by Amazon (with free shipping to boot).

In fairness to WT they have a message that clearance items are in "limited supply". But in 2010 you either have an accurate inventory system integrated with your e-commerce Point of Sale or you don't - they don't. The days of "We might have some more of those in back - leave it on the web site" should be long, long gone.

I've had pretty good dealings with them although we have an actual brick and mortar store here in Indy. Its nice to be able to run in there and get some drills, taps, or burrs. They do carry a bunch of imported machinery, although I've never bought any of it... I tend to stick to the consumables and hand tools. I agree that their web site isn't the best...their stores are not the most "modern" either...but at least you can talk to a reasonably competent counter guy.

I purchased my milling machine from them a few months ago. I made sure to call ahead and make sure they had it in stock and I took delivery a few days later. Sure it would have been easier to have their inventory levels online but it only took a minute to call and check. With numerous items I can see it being more of a hassle though.

I ordered from them recently. I just needed an ordinary travel tool kit for my car. I thought shipping was reasonable and the delivery came sooner than I expected. They are a very efficient company.

Our store here in Tampa definitely has that...."gone through" feel. But I'm able to find things there quickly. I know that I can go there and get every size of sanding disc made, a super-sized tilting bandsaw, my favorite cutting oil, and the biggest freaking C clamps I've ever seen in my life....I suppose they use those down at the port.

I'm coming back to this thread with some new experience. I needed a part a few weeks ago and stopped into the Wholesale Tool in Tulsa. They did not have a part, but suggested a jury-rig solution that would work. Then they proceeded to GIVE, not sell me that part that I needed. I offered to pay - no deal - they gave it to me.

I still worry that the website might not the best but I have to give them high praise for in-person customer care. I would rather deal with good people and dicey inventory software then slick web portals and sorry people.

I always order tools online and I tried wttool.com for the first time last month. I was very happy with my order. It arrived on-time, in full and everything is still working just right.

I've been to their brick 'n' mortar store here in Indy, and it's pretty neat.

That said, it's a little tedious to sort through everything to find the stuff that's not cheap ****, and usually what's NOT cheap ****, is overpriced.

Nice old-school feel to the place, though. I'll still stop in from time to time, but i don't think there'd be a void in my life if it wasn't there.
