I have a Dashin Prince - I never heard of it either - but i the exact same lathe Grizzly sells as their tool room lathe for ~$7k. It was from an estate sale and I got it for $1200. Great lathe! You just have to look around and not be in a hurry. You get a lot more for your money with a 3 phase machine and it is easy to make a rotary phase converter or get a VFD

Hey, I have one of those that I purchased in the 80s. Still going. I have it set up with a Royal collet chuck with Hardinge collets. If they are still made as well now as they were then it's a solid buy.
I have seen them sold under various names however.

So I finally got a workable Lathe. Found a 7x16 Mini lathe on Offerup for stupid cheap. Not very rigid but If its my space/needs.

Started ordering tooling. My god I will never order from CDCO ever again. I should have listened to the various threads on the internet about them. I'm sure the product will be fine when it arrives, but any mistakes, any warranty issues is a challenge.

Here is my problem. For some reason my ship to address is missing the second line/suite number. I noticed this after I ordered and since it was holiday time (Thanksgiving) promptly sent them an email. No response. Called them the following week, Wednesday the item is marked as shipped without a responded or getting through to them.

Finally got through to them on Friday, after a few minutes on the phone I had to hang up. The guy on the other end simply does not have a good enough grasp of English to understand what I'm saying. Yelling back at me "You didn't give me a suite number" doesn't help. So I had to take my problem to UPS.

The problem is UPS doesn't allow the receiver to change UPS ground information until delivery attempts have been made, and you need the invoice number from their delivery attempt. I wait for my delivery sitting in a chair outside the building. I never see them even make an attempt to deliver anywhere to the building. But it is big and they might have come into a different entrance.

3 weeks later and I still don't have my item. UPS doesn't let me correct the address or hold at location as this has to be initiated by the sender, which CDCO doesn't understand. I don't have a delivery attempt notice because they don't have the full address. It is scheduled to attempt delivery again Wednesday, I expect it to be returned to CDCO at some point.

Also their email is broken I get the following bounceback multiple times "Message not delivered There was a problem delivering your message to [email protected]. 454 4.7.0 TLS not available due to local problem"

This post was overdue - Lathe has been in the shop for a few months now, and heavily used too. It's an older Enco 12x36, big enough for what I need, and in very nice shape. Got a DRO ready to go on, just have to figure out how to mount the "Y Axis" (Cross Slide).

Ive been looking for an older South Bend to rebuild. They just don't come available often in the southeast.

I picked up a 1944 South Bend 10L a few years ago for my garage.

I moved to California five years ago and left my workshop and heavy equipment behind (lathe, bport, presses, etc).

My old lathe was a Rockwell 10 that I'd had for 20 years of good service. Would have cost me a ton to ship it across the country so I sold it to a buddy and used the funds to buy the South Bend.

Got a Boxford 4.5 inch as a parting present from a previous job I had many years ago. It needed (and still needs) a tailstock. Gears for screw cutting are missing. I do use it infrequently, but it is one hell of a pleasure to have it at hand when I need it :bounce:

I have two Hardinge HLV-H Lathes.
I’m rebuilding one right now and I
don’t have power to the other one yet.

I had a Smithy, and a Hardinge Chucker,
I sold both of those and they partially
funded the new-to-me Hardinge lathes.

Little Machine Shop in So Cal is a pretty reliable source for small lathe stuff, and they have a lot of stuff for those little 7x10,12,14 and 16" lathes.

I've been happy with All Industrial as well, also in So Cal.

Prices are pretty good at both, they stock some less expensive stuff, but not bottom of the barrel. Since they are in SoCal, shipping to Nevada you could have received and already broken your order in 3 weeks. :p

I'm in Northern California and usually have my orders in 3-4 days.

Boxford was pretty much a South Bend if I remember correctly. You could probably make a SB 9" tailstock and gears work.

Having almost no knowledge about machining and looking at a lot of junk I ended up buying new. I think it's a good idea if you are just starting out, a new machine with a warranty. I have a friend who is a machinist and he guided me to the new ones, guess he didn't want the calls, lol. Grizzly or precision Mathews is a safe bet, getting a made in Taiwan seems to be a step above Chinese machines. but having bought grizzly stuff before I felt pretty good buying a lathe from them, espesialy so far so good.

Very nice. Which DRO are you going with.

You wouldn't happen to have a manual for that would you? I have a Enco that I need some wiring and a few other things sorted out.

Very Nice, EZ!

I see a trav-a-dial (?) and lever collet closer. Did you get the D1-3 5C collet nose?

Are you still running the Monarch DC drive or a conversion?

It just arrived at 10:30 this morning and I haven't had time to check it out, other than removing the plastic wrapping tape. It took days of work just to make a spot for it in my heavily overcrowded shop. And, now that it has been moved into place, it will take me days more to get my shop back in operation.

Hello!

Just a cheap-o run of the Chinesium-Mill eBay DRO. Got the same one for the lathe and the mill.

As for the lathe, I actually DO have the manual for it! Let me know what in particular you're looking for and I can definitely take some snaps for you, or in a bit of time get the whole thing scanned if need be. Might be faster if you shoot me a PM here since I don't check into the thread every day.

I acquired another....Series 612 Monarch @ 16 x 30. Heavy beast at 7100# and requires the advanced rigging class as the CG is basically inside the headstock. I also sank my forklift a good 2-1/2" into the asphalt driveway while on final approach, the large amount of rain has affected my subgrade... Converting the electrics from 480/3/60 to 240/3/60 and it has a hydraulically shifted headstock, so I'm working on proving that system out currently.

Got all caught up on this thread this morning.. Lots of interesting discussions. I hadnt realized how closely the Boxford is to the South Bend especially below the ways..

I purchased a KO Lee tool and cutter grinder recently so my time has been spent on that, with the obligatory lathe polishing of the parts that need tuned up..

Nothing fancy, but a little Craftsman 12x36 and a Clausing 8530 does what I need...I have no clue what I am doing, just teaching myself as I go..

I picked up this '37/'38 Craftsman 101 just last week. Cleaned it up and got it operational last night. It's small, but it certainly has a ton of character. Looking forward to turning some small parts/bushings with it.

Ended up flipping that one on Sunday and picked up a Lathemaster 8x14 last night. Pics to come once it's reassembled and on the bench.

Who here has a metal lathe? I'm looking to get one off craigslist. Ive seen the new ones and they just don't seem tough enough. Id like to get an old south bend or similar. Some on craigslist go for about 500 (that would be the one I'm interested in) Question is, it seems like I would use it a ton,(mostly motorcycle fab parts, bungs, shaving lower trees).

How often do you lathe owners use yours? Was it worth it to buy? And how much did you get it for? Pictures would be awesome.
I started with a old Craftsman lathe and later on I stumbled on to Atlas horizontal mill dirt cheap.More recently I purchased a 13”SB lathe and a Index vertical mill from a man who’s health situation had rendered them useless to him.Just like everyone else said, very handy to have around and in my case, very minimal knowledge as to how to use them. Both of the most recent purchases came with a ton of tooling.

You ladies with your Pacemakers and dinky little 10EEs best turn away now. I present you with the ultimate in home shop lathes- the Unimat-SL!

unimat01.jpg

Yep, the very pinnacle in speed, power, rigidity, precision, accuracy, stiffness, reliability, user-friendliness and all-around ubiquity.

Infinite spindle speeds, everything from "full stop" to "I think it's turning, probably", capable of creating as wide a range of threads as you have taps and dies for, and has nearly-infinite surfacing speeds, depending on how much you let the belt slip.

The innovative cord-mounted power switch contains no expensive and fragile Thyratron tubes, and can run on just two-thirds of 3-phase power. The motor-to-machine ratio puts any of those wimp Pacemakers to shame, and can take a cut measuring in the hundreds of millionths.

However, this is just too much machine for me, so I'm looking to trade. I'll take a 14" Pacemaker straight up or a 10EE if you throw in some cash.

:D

You're gonna twist that into an art piece in your Springfield, right?

-Y'know, I hadn't thought about that. I should see if there's a way I could fit a CXA toolpost to this thing. :D
