Who's using One Key or Ticks?

I'm really confused by the batteries with the one key "signal" symbol on the bottom. Some of my newer 5.0's and 9.0's have this. Will the app pair with these batteries?

Also if you're using a Tick when you click on "nearby devices" on the mobile app does it show Ticks?

Mine just says "scanning for devices" with a little traveling circle. Forever. I mean forever. Never seems to find anything. BT is turned on if it matters.

But if I go into the individual inventory item with a Tick it does give me a recent location, so it is finding the Ticks. But nothing comes up on "nearby devices."

For me, the one key stuff isn't worth the price increase. I wouldnt use it. Example, maybe a possible torque setting, a torque wrench isnt much slower & I might not trust the One Key electronics as much . I do have numerous batteries w/ the key symbol. Maybe they made batteries trackable.

I am thinking about getting the 2758 - 3/8 One Key for $210 w/ (2) 2ah batteries at CPO.

Edit: The 2758-22 is back to $250.

The only thing I'm using the one key for is a ultra low torque on my impact driver for fragile things, and a custom low speed setting on the drill to keep me from burning up drill bits on stainless. Kinda nice for that.

It wouldn't surprise me if the batteries had bluetooth built into them. The technology is apparently very cheap. I recently bought a pack of cheap LED light bulbs at costco (like 4 for $15) and they try to connect when I'm searching for bluetooth devices on my iphone.

I just got this response directly from Milwaukee:

"The TICK is not designed to show up in the Nearby Devices section of the ONE-KEY app.

Instead, if you have added the TICK to an item in inventory successfully, you can view the location information of that item in the Inventory section of the app
."

That's pretty ****** 'cause that means you have to remember which tools have a Tick and then individually select that tool to go into its detail screen.

Also I can tell you the app is not "working in the background." IE if you walk past Ticks when the app is not OPEN in your phone it won't recognize them, even if BT is on.

Seems to make the odds of finding lost or stolen tools near zero. Not only would someone have to be within BT range, they'd have to have the OK app installed on their phone and have the app open when in BT range. LOL

I'll get pics of the OK batteries in a minute.......

so, are both M12 and m18 batteries available with the key symbol? i dont recall seeing it anywhere on anything i have. where it is located?

Here ya go, directly above the "AH" of 5.0 AH

On the 5.0's it's hit or miss but I think every 9.0 I own has it. Same spot.

Just purchased the one key combo with free light and mid torque impact. I'm not sure it was worth it, but the price reduction and the free stuff I decided to give it a shot. I like the idea of the adjustability guess I will see if it is actually used in the real world as a general homeowner. either way I figure they are solid additions for a drill and impact driver. I have been wanting to get the cordless impact as well so I don't have to mess with an air hose when doing tire rotations or break jobs.

The ticks and tracking stuff on the one key seems pretty useless for my case, but for a contractor that might misplace a tool and need to see what job they left it on maybe it has a benefit.

Here's what Milwaukee just said about the batteries w OK symbol:

"No - the app cannot connect to batteries, today. Nor will they in the future. There are however certain components we started building into all packs (standard) that we plan to leverage in the future. Can’t share too many details now, but stay tuned"

I think dewalt has a feature on their Bluetooth batteries that you can disable the batteries via an app.. I don't remember completely, but I wanna say it was meant for the guy that leaves tools behind on site, so he can make sure they won't be used by other people, or won't work if they suddenly grow legs..

Might be what Milwaukee is up to if that's not something you can currently do with O/K. This is nice and all, but a bit much for me to make use of.

I explained my concerns about Ticks not showing in Nearby Devices in the app and they agreed and said an update is coming out in Jan or Feb of '18

I gotta say....the One Key Feedback at Milwaukee is quick to respond. Generally Milwaukee sends out a canned "we got your message and will respond in 24-48 hours".....then they just NEVER respond. I initially got to them by submitting feedback when the app itself requested it.

Thats cause no one uses OK and that support team isnt busy lol.

Glad theres an app fix for the ticks coming.

I did get the OK 3/8 CPO deal. I know have 4 OK things plus ticks, but havent played too much with it.

I actually agree. I think it's been a flop and I think they're trying to save it before considering abandoning it.

I'd love to see true GPS tracking built in, but that'd probably push the cost of the tools crazy high. Then you could disable from a great distance, too.

As I've said I really like their inventory part of the app. I believe you can just do it at Milwaukeetool.com, too. You can upload a photo of the tool and even a copy of purchase information.

It's a pretty neat little database. You don't have to have One Key anything, and you don't have to have a single Milwaukee tool. The only advantage of a Milwaukee tool is that it knows Milwaukee part numbers and will call up a stock image for you. But I've been logging Echo, Ridgid, Hobart, Lincoln, DeWalt etc. If it's not Milwaukee I just click "take photo" and can upload a photo right there. Possibly good for insurance I figure.

You can generate a spreadsheet to print, too.

Honestly it's just easier for me to walk around my shop with my phone and record all my stuff rather than a laptop running Excel or some such. That's just me.

I have a tick but I can't use it because there's no One Key app for Windows Phone, and my burner Android phone that I've used for apps I absolutely had to have runs Android 4.4 and the Milwaukee app requires 5.0+ arbitrarily.

I suspect they could have added true GPS for not too much. Small crappy GPS modules have gotten insanely cheap. I have one for embedded projects that I want to say was like 11$. The bigger issue is getting the location information onto a server somewhere from a tool. It either has to use bluetooth to a known device that has internet (a phone with OK app) or it has to have a cellular modem built into it with service and that's a nightmare to manage (we do it at work for devices and you would not believe how complicated and awful it is especially for worldwide devices).

Your tool is stolen. It has a tick on it. The tick knows exactly where it is. You don't know where the tick is. How does the tick get that information to you?

I have not bought into the One Key system yet BUT I am willing to run the app or bluetooth to help a lost tool find its' rightfull owner. For this reason I am thinking of installing the app. I feel that the more tools find their owner the more chances that this technology will grow and be more effective and hopefully more affordable.
Anything to discourage the theft of expensive tools. I do like to keep defective tools in open sight so that maybe the person stealing and selling the stuff they stole run into the person they sold it to at a later date and gets his just reward. If you know what I mean.
