The ones from HF (made by William Tool) work fine. Why do you even care about the Proto. They're likely coming from the same place.

I haven't tried the Proto, but the HF version has been very sturdy for me (turning exhaust bolts with a cheater pipe)

armstrong makes a series of them, 10-996 (1/4"), 11-996 (3/8"), and 12-996 (1/2").

zoro removed them from their site recently, saying they had been discontinued. tooltopia lists them as out of stock, but says more are due by February.

they are randomly available elsewhere, on ebay and amazon. they are not cheap, although i imagine that they fall into line with the proto one from a price point of view.

i have the 12-996, and really like it. i find that "hourglass" handle to be about the best in the business.

ratchets are one of the only tools price doesn't affect my decision as much. Being made by Williams isn't as reassuring as it once was to me, but hearing your opinions I would definitely look into them. not a good comparison but I have broken so many silver eagle sockets and ratchets that, that is only my emergency set in my truck, it makes me sick when I see how much they want new. I paid about 1/5 of new but still could of had a more dependable set for money. I am biased toward proto fyi

Did you look at OP's link? It's crazy! Flex AND indexable. I kinda want one just 'cause. But I don't think I'd ever use it. It's a double jointed dwarf.

In case there is any confusion, The HF indexing ratchets are made by "William Tool" with a Taiwan COO. This is not the same "Williams" that makes US tools and sells rebranded Taiwan tools as a division of Snap-on Inc.

Stop with the voice of reason! We prefer wild rumors here.

If you go the ebay route, might also want to search for its twin brother out there labeled as Mac XRIC10FPA. (3/8 dr)
