i know this is a dumb question...but why are spark plug ratchets curved at the end? is it for better leverage or something? i never understood why when a regular ratchet works perfect.

because once loose you can crank them out faster. Also for clearance i guess :dunno:

As with all ratchets, it's a matter of personal preference. However back in the day when most motor were V8s, mounted lengthwise, and there was more space in the engine compartment, the bent handle offered improved torque, grip, and comfort to some. Kind of like a crank handle.

The bent ratchets just fit certain cars better than anything else. I used to have a 1970 Mach 1 and that was what worked the best for me on that one but I haven’t used my spark plug ratchet in 20 years now.

On older V8's they sort of bent around the head and swung in the open space near the inner fender panel. Of course big block Mustangs didn't use a sparkplug wrench...they used Prayer.

I had a 69 mach I and the plugs near the shock towers were really tight to get onto.

I agree that the curved handle is probably to help speedwrench the plug out once you break it free.

Most of the time,I use my 3/8 drive air ratchet to remove the old spark plugs only.I have a stubby 3/8 drive Cornwell hand ratchet to tighten the new spark plugs with since it fits in the tight spots better.

why do people think that changing plugs in a BB mustang is tough??
I have changed a ton of them and they are not that bad
even when they have the thermactor tubes in place

put the SP socket on the plug
use a wrench on the end of the SP socket
remove wrench and uncrew plug by hand (with the SP socket still in place)

no big

They work well when there is a wide engine in a narrow engine bay (think of a big V-8 in a small or midsize RWD car). The straight part of the handle follows along the space between the engine and wheel house. The bent end of the handle pokes out over the wheel house and away from the engine, giving you hand clearance and leverage.
