Why delete Free Parking threads instead of locking?

Just a suggestion, another forum I help moderate has a policy to lock threads with an explanation of why they are locked. It helps cut down on the "what happened to the thread on ...." threads. It also helps keep the forum rules in the forefront, as well as keeps the (hopefully) relevant posts still visable to the users. The exception to that policy is the obvious spam threads (and the replies), which get moved intact to the moderators forum, where we can log IP's and ban users from there.

As an example, I replied to a thread in Free Parking today, which was a bit of a rant about dealer techs blaming aftermarket installers for problems. The reply I posted provided some actual technical content, which due to the post deletion is no longer available for other members to view. Seems like a bit of a waste to delete a thread instead of trying to redirect it with some gentle moderation.

Hmmm, the thread was "cleaned up" irrelevant posts were removed, yours was the last I saw. Wonder why it was deleted after that? Pity, the tool rec by the O/P looked interesting, didn't save the website...

A topic is usualy deleted because it gets off topic or comments have gotten out of hand so with that said if the mods or admin delete it. It is to stop further out of hand comments. I do see you point but then moderation takes alot of time, ask a mod about it.

Stuff like that is exactly what I'm talking about. No real reason to clean the thread up unless it's way out of hand, which it didn't seem like to me. All that was really needed was a little gentle moderation to keep the thread on topic and insults to a minimum.

I've told Ryan before that I helped/help (semi-retired) moderate a much bigger forum than this one, and I'd be more than happy to help steer Free Parking into a slightly more relevant forum. I'm still willing to do that, especially considering how much time I spend there and enjoy some of the more relevant/technical stuff that comes out of that forum and doesn't really fit elsewhere.

Some times the clean up of a topic leaves it with gaps and that makes it worse or hard to follow. Easier to go bang and close it. Endss the subject and any issues. I can see what you are saying and like you many of us see the hard work Mods and Admin have and many of us want to help so we can enjoy more of this forum and what it is about. Spam posts recently have been a similar issue.

Well, I saw the screenshot posted of the thread and I guess I understand why it was deleted now. I still think it could have been handled a little differently so it retained valuable content, but that wasn't my decision to make.

This isn't a "post mortem" thread as far as I'm concerned. Personally, I could care less about the recent drama in Free Parking, besides agreeing that the forum needs less "chatroom" and more "relaxed but relevant" topics. I was just wondering what happened to a thread where I posted what I thought was a relevant and technical contribution. I was curious to see what the original poster's take on my reply was, and was startled that it had been deleted entirely, that's all.


As I said earlier, I don't remember it being that bad, but after seeing the screenshot of what was posted, I'm not suprized it happened even if it could have been dealt with differently.

I was simply using the thread I posted in as a recent example, not as something I was specifically asking about.

Ryan has how many forums as part of his business ? I think Six and correct me if I am wrong. Here The GJ, The HAMB, The Jockey Journal, The Gear Journal, Dog Fight and Ford Barn. So from that I think Ryan knows how to run a forum and I can see he and his team of Mods on all his forums do not tolerate ****. Now if Ryan runs all those forums I think he knows what he is doing and If I did not like the way he runs this ship I would have jumped years ago. So from that I think you can see I am happy as to how it all works here. Mind you I still learn more every day here.

Oh time frame us Aussies and Kiwis work to makes for us seeing and not seeing many things that happen here so some times it makes it hard to comment although I did see some **** earlier posted by a scammer and within seconds of reporting it had vanished.

I'm also aware of how many forums Ryan runs, having visited or being a member of a couple of them. Still, the forum I helped/help out on has been around for over 15 years now, through five different brands of forum software, and close to or over 100k active members. I've helped out on and off for over ten years myself, and still appreciate the occasional outside viewpoint on how to make things run more smoothly. I've pretty much phased out my helping out over there, but still have access to mod controls for the occasional time I'm needed and nobody is around.

I understand what you are saying and offering. If Ryan wants help I think he knows who he will ask as I am sure he will want some one that knows the rules here and how the palce runs and works.
