It's been many years ago but I worked for a contractor and the boss would get bored and show up on the job just to meddle. One day we were at a hanging some PITA lights using 14' ladders in a hallway and of course a few wirenuts were dropped. That's about the time the boss came in. We came down off the ladders to him saying there was a dime on the ground and pointed at a nut; the foreman said "that's not a dime, that's a wirenut and it cost more for me to pick it up than what you paid for it". Then I got paid about $20 to pick up $3 worth of wirenuts.

One employer I had counted every wire nut on all the company trucks every weekend, then would go back through the records to see how many were billed. He did that with everything besides screws.
I can think of better things to do with my weekends.
Do what dealer repair shops do, bill 10 or 20% to each bill for "shop supplies" even for air in the tires.

Did he get upset if there were more wire nuts than he expected, or only if there were less?

I have long had this idea to eliminate having to do stock taking. A business should be able to keep track of everything that is in stock. They know what they buy and they know what they sell. If the system is setup correctly everything should be able to be traceable.

I really hated having to do stock taking so have been thinking up a way to not have to for years.

One day I’ll try to implement it practically and see if I can get it to work in reality.

Its a goal of all businesses that have inventory, and after working in a bunch of manufacturing sites and companies, I've determined it's essentially a unicorn in the US.

Even if you properly track consumption, waste and purchasing, you still have to periodically cycle count. It can be less work than full inventory counts, but still requires good procedures, discipline and tracking. The effort is about equal in all approaches, it's just spread out differently.

I support a bunch of manufacturing sites and we range between full weekly counts to semi annual, depending on complexity, resources, skill and discipline. I tell them all I want them to get good enough to just do cycle counting but don't actually expect to get there

I did a lot of network installs. I always went for extra cat 5 wires in layout. I spent many hours fighting for this.
One large install I fought for a extra line to each work area, big fight but I did win. Two months later they added extra person to each work area. I was a hero. Too often the dollar is the deciding factor and not having to run more cable was a big dollar saver.
Got to say the nice thing about racing very few decisions were made by the cost.

From 1995-1998 I worked for a contractor that did annual inventory of the trucks. I was a helper the first year and the crew leader I had taught me how to do inventory; start throwing everything away the week before the count. I just stopped stocking parts on my truck a month before; The GM was a little pissed at me the day before the last inventory count before I moved on because I had the truck driver bring me out 30 wire nuts, 15 screws, and a single gang box. There was nothing on my truck and I wanted it that way if I'm expected to count everything before I can go home. The other 11 months of the year the truck was full.

And no room for brooms?

On the subject of cleaning. One of the happiest days of my life was the day I started cleaning my shop with a vacuum cleaner instead of a broom.

There has long been this thing in the trades where it’s just expected for people to have to do things the hard labouring way. A vacuum is far quicker than a broom.

I’ll be smiling big time the day I buy a backpack vacuum.
