Why do so many members omit a 'location'?

I was just curious why so many people don't include any location in their GJ profile? The answers to so many questions is entirely dependent upon the location, so why not include at least a general location? :dunno:

Because their in a goverment sponsered tool relocation protection program. Once you get 20 or more "You *****" people start to hunt you down to snuff you out. This will better their odds of getting the next deal.
----Really ------ what your back if you know what's best.

Everyone is afraid to divulge info about themselves. They think lynch mob will be after them.

Seriously....a location helps in so many many ways. Plus nosey people like me want to know what region folks live in.

Not an option on tapatalk. Haven't seen an actual computer in a very long time so I just use the app on my phone.

It really does ****, I am always looking for good garages to break into and it is so much harder to find the garages when they don't list a specific location.

I often wondered the same thing, its not like it displays a link to map quest your street address.

I live in a small town, and even then there is almost no way anyone would be able to find me without me giving them directions to my house, even GPS won't work out here.

I asked this in another chat group and got blasted for it. I liked the government sponsored tool relocation program, that was really original! Just knowing what state would make the way people answer something a lot more helpful.

Actually, I'm so far back in the woods, you'd never find me....want to know how far back? So far back my next door neighbor was 16 before he found out asphalt wasn't a hip disease....He was 18 before he found out Grape Nuts wasn't a venereal disease....

I'm going to send you a PM, don't panic, I was just curious if I could do it.

I thought about it myself but I got over it. What do you do.

On the other side of it I live close to my county road "very close" I try my best not to announce what's in my shop but its hard. Especially at night if doors open and lights are on.

I guess if a person wanted to pick you out on GJ, follow your threads, eye spy your shop inventory, read everyone of your entries "hoping you mess up and give out your location/address of your particular town". Or post pictures of your surrounding area. I guess it could happen. Especially if you happen to live in a small town as I do.

Holy **** I'm deleting my town.

The upside I got one mean watch cow and "dog"!

This is why I created a sticky in the "Introduce youself thread". I was hoping it would help cure some of the "location" issues. :dunno:

I guess until new members start asking questions, they don't realize how necessary it is to have atleast a general location to get the proper advice.

Some people work for the government in a sensitive capacity, some pretend to. I on the other hand...well...I know aliens which is probably more sensitive than anything they would do.

Otherwise they don't want to have anyone come looking for them because of what they say on here I suppose.:dunno: Y'all can try and come after me for the things I say (though I don't really say anything inflammatory) but probably a bad idea because of the aliens. Not free parking but you asked.:willy_nil

I always get a kick out of the "where do I go to find________".
Or: "Who do I go to for__________"
& these same pinheads have NO location info whatsoever anywhere. If we had an idea where they are.... many on here could point them directly where they need to go.

State should almost be mandatory. General area in that state would be better.

There was a guy on here a while ago that needed a certain type of bolt & wanted to know where to find it.... but no matter how many times he was asked, he wouldn't even give out his state.:dunno:
Someone even offered to send him that bolt.... for free... & still wouldn't give it.:thefinger:bitchslap

For those that fear theft, etc, I like the sign: "I have access to a backhoe & 3,000 acres.... don't push your luck"!

Paranoia.

Remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I don't even like having my return address on stuff I sell online.

I don't care if you know where I live. Look at Don Long's set up. Everyone knows where he's at and you don't see him hiding his location. I have the shop doors open to the street all the time and if I was worried about getting robbed, it would probably be someone local that walks or drives by. On the other hand, I never talk about my security set up at all on here or to anyone outside my immediate family, but if any of you are ever in the area, send me a PM and you'd be welcome to stop by.

A lot of people are afraid (somewhat rightly) that between posting pictures and locations someone will decide to come by and do a thorough and excessive shop cleaning for them (without authorization)... It doesn't matter if what they have is 2nd hand **** tools - a meth head tweaker will steal it just because... and will spend the time to grok out a location to see what they can steal!

Seriously (and sadly) that's why a lot won't. Even I (starting a business) won't go any deeper on a board that "region" (in my case NE California) for that reason - once you've had the Methomatic Cleaning Crews hit you (and for me this was 3 moves ago) you never want to give too much up on a board. Because, ya know, you never know who is going to be reading these boards... and when you live in a town of a couple hundred, it's awful easy to connect the dots.

Over here....
Because I'm never in the same location at all times. I was just 'over there' and now I'm just over here.
But I'm not p a r a n o i d !

I'm just a few bubbles off center.

I post my city of 135,000 and photos of my house. At least one member drove by and recognized it. I'm not concerned, that is what insurance is for. I highly doubt a local to me would troll this forum and find the few posts that would let them identify my hose for potential theft.

I am a little vague about my location. But if someone were to go through my build thread they would now exactly where I am. Then they could go through my dog, alarm and cameras, and be real lucky, if I'm not home. But in the end I would win, cause I would get all new stuff, thank you insurance company.

I have no problem with those who refuse to show their location until they ask a question where location and/or climate are factors. Why anyone would ask about insulation or depth of footings or where they can buy something without indicating where they live is beyond me. They are really shooting themselves in the foot.
Perhaps everyone should just refuse to answer or give any information to these posters. I have passed on some that I might have been able to help with simply because I had no idea where the poster lived.
Seriously, for those who are paranoid about this, all that is needed is a general location like south west, north east, or the country if they do not live in the US.

You'd be surprised how much info you inadvertently put out on the internet.

One site asks you for your birthday, one site asks you for your location, one site asks you for your name. I google search your username, find all instances of you and put it all together. I find your family members, your mother's maiden name. Next thing, I'm calling your bank, tell the nice lady I forgot my account number and I need to do an EFT ASAP. Give her your mother's maiden name, verify your birthday and address, and bank routing numbers are public information. Next day, and I'm off withdrawing all your funds.

Not saying it will happen to you specifically, but it's not hard.

At the very least, you can post a your state of residence, or if you're outside the U.S., your country and however you identify your region. And take off your tin foil hats!

I just received a new health ins policy and it says that they will use any information posted on social media to evaluate my health and lifestyle. I guess if you put it out there, it's game. It wouldn't be hard to find me but to prove that I posted it might take another step. No need to make it too easy.

There is no one named Zeke in Long Beach that I know and searching "zeke in long beach" will just send you into a tailspin. But, as I said, it wouldn't be hard to find me. I just don't want anything I say to be held against me.

However, I am in Long Beach.
