Why do so many seem to hate pegboard?

Solar me throw this out there for all those who say they don't want their expensive tools hanging in plain view. How many of those saying that have those expensive tools sitting in an equally expensive, oversized Mac or Snap On etc tool chest? Cause those monster expensive boxes stick out like a sore thumb and in my mind are far more noticeable from a distance than the brand of wrench hanging on a wall.

As I said in my earlier post though, my tools reside in the tool chests for the most part.mi reserve my pegboard for hanging parts, pieces, specialty stuff that doesn't really work in drawers, etc. I'm a very organized person and I like the flexibility pegboard affords for that purpose.

I agree with you last statement, but for the comment on expensive tools out in the open. If a thief has to take time to do things, i.e. open a drawer and search, chances are they will choose the easier route of ****** and run.

I think he was thinking of people just taking the whole toolbox, as most big toolboxes are on casters and someone can roll it out of your garage and tip it into the back of their van.

Two burly dudes and one empty work van has spelled the end for a lot of motorcycles.

What are those clips holing your clamps? I have seen that picture before but just noticed them now for the first time.

Those are pegboard clips -- the Stay-Put kind, which use an oversized woodscrew. I didn't need pegboard back there, but was able to drill holes and use the same clips.

I covered the plywood wall with aluminum flashing to reduce the risk of fire.

Actually I've gotten something very interesting out of this thread. There seem to be more trains of thought behind pegboard than I ever would have thought

1. Quick access to commonly used tools
2. A place to keep less valuable or frequently borrowed tools
3. A place to keep odd shaped, over-sized, or hard to organize tools
4. The opposite of #1, a place to keep infrequently used tools so that the one time you do need it you don't have to spend 20 min trying to find it.

I'm in the #3 camp, but I actually think #4 is a little genius.

Sorry I'm a month late to the discussion. I think this thread has actually been useful in planning my own shop.

Personally, I'm in camp #5: It has a certain aesthetic nothing else has. If that look matches your style, great! If that look doesn't, not so good!

My shop-to-be is getting trimmed out in reclaimed wood taken from neighbors wanting to burn down 'those old junky buildings.' I live in a 100 year old farmhouse and want my shop to look like great-grandpa may have used it. What a better way to achieve that look than displaying my collection of old rusty family tools on old-fashioned pegboard? The quick access will also be nice when doing simple stuff that don't require precision tools. My lawnmower won't know if I used great-grandpa's wrench to take off the blades, even if it is a little rough after 90 years!
However, all of my non-rusty, newer tools will be housed in drawers to minimize temperature swings/condensation. Lots of humidity in my neck of the Shire...

I'm also late to this party......I find it useful like many have stated for tools I don't use often. Gets them out of my roll around boxes.

I found a cheap way to keep the hooks from falling out when you grab the tool; put a small dab of clear RTV behind the hook. Keeps them secure, but easy to remove if you need to relocate.

I can't get enough of it. I have a nice collection of flathead V8 intakes hanging from some pegboard. I can stare at it those manifolds all day long while I'm the garage.

I don't give two hoots how dirty they get.

Another cheap way is to zip tie them to the peg board. Works for me and a cheap way to keep them in place.

Please see the attachment. I'd like to graduate to this setup someday. Looks like maybe 3/4 inch plywood to me, eh?

I wouldn't be able to reach half those tools!

I have never found it particularly useful. I probably wouldn't have any if it were not for the fact that my work bench came with it.

Marginally useful as is.

I just use a spot of hot glue in the peg hole in the limited amount of pegboard I use. Mostly to hang bags of screws and items in their store packaging.

Been working out of my rollaway and top chest for 40+ years. I can reach behind me and count to the drawer I need, then reach in and grab the needed tool while holding something together with the other hand. Ex wife was always on me to install pegboard because her BIL (world's smartest man) used it. I would lose the ability to work the way I always have if I went to pegboard. My only reason.

For me, personally, it presents a very "cluttered" look and I've yet to run across a truly functional, legitimate pegboard set-up.

Perhaps that's where my dislike of it stems from. The pegboard set-ups that I've encountered in the past were always very shoddy contraptions, with hooks/clips/etc. etc. always falling out/off the pegboard once a tool was removed...sometimes remaining attached to the tool. Certainly didn't instill confidence nor a like for the material in me from a young age. Maybe if I encountered a marginally decent and assembled properly arrangement, I'd be more accepting of it.

All of that aside, I just do not like the "look" of it as well. I'm not one to have on display all of my items and since my garage/shop is home to automotive endeavors as well as woodworking and ceramic pursuits, there's stuff flying everywhere...and drawers help to eliminate the amount and accumulation of dust, etc. on everything...whereas pegboard would not.

I've seen online some real jazzy set-ups and must admit, some have appealed to me, but again, at the end of the day I like to try and stash my stuff away from prying eyes as well as keeping it more clean both visually and physically than pegboard would allow.

put me down as a hater. for me, it just seems to be an inefficient use of space. one wrench per hook can fill up a wall pretty quickly. plus, it generally looks horrible after a few years as the board wears. if it works for you, that's all that matters. i prefer to have everything in a toolchest.

I put the white pegboard up everywhere. It keeps the garage bright. The area over the bench has some tools hung on it, but the rest of it is just cheap wallboard. Makes it easy to hang garage art as well.

I use it where it really saves time. I have a small piece behind my welding bench and keep small wrench, adjustables etc so I don't need to walk to the tool box. I also have a pretty wide selection of AN Aluminum fittings and weld bungs that I keep pretty organized using a 4x8ft piece.

Dan, the OP asked a question. Why are YOU all worked up over the varied answers? :dunno:

No one is bashing anyone for using it, just giving their opinion on why they do or don't.

Jim

Ha ha, you think that's "worked up"? Uh, no.
My comment was that the OP asked why so many hate it. Seems like he got more hate it/love it responses than reasons why.

When I'm actually "all worked up" you'll know.

I used to like pegboard until my idiot brother grabbed one of my body hammers, and beat the **** out of it, because it was handy. He couldn't understand why I got pissed. He's not allowed back in my shop.

I like pegboard.

But it's not my only storage. There's toolboxes, the workbench, shelves, and other wall hangers.

Stuff on my pegboard include a set of basic screwdrivers, basic pliers, my hand saws, levels, squares, ear protection and eye protection, utility knives, pens, F clamps, tape... Stuff that I'd like to access at a moments notice.

Power tools go on shelves and under the workbench. Most hand tools are in a toolbox. Garden tool are on other types of wall hangers.

I like pegboard it gives the shop a nice look. Pegboard is useful for those tools that are used often such as a hammer, screwdrivers, files, pliers and much more. i don't think anyone should ever hang up all there tools since you might have to much cubic feet to fill up. pegboard is the perfect compliment to a tool chest.

It's like anything else, some tools need pegboard, some don't. You have to work in a garage, anything to make it better to get the job done. I like looking at the big money garages with all the fancy stuff, but I don't have the time to do all the dusting and polishing they do. I had a real nice looking truck once, spent more time cleaning and waxing, then I did hauling, so the truck went bye bye.

I used it on the front of some cabinets as doors. The cabinets were for longer term storage items so don't get opened alot. I hang gaskets and some other light weight larger supplies, I'm happy with the results.

OK, why are you so concerned that people are answering his question that you defended using peg boards four times?

As for myself and my shop, I dont want to cover my walls with pegboard or store my tools on the walls. I dont mind if anyone does, thats their choice.

Sometimes I just can't get enough of a garage with a nice pegboard layout. It really brings that one look to a garage that gives a sense of a working mans decoration.

I don't hate it but the amount of room it takes up vs tool storage doesn't make sense to me. Imo think a lot of "old timers" like the ease of pegboard vs young guys like myself who like the clean look of a garage. I use it above my bench for tools when working on something to keep them out of way.

I used a sheet of it over on my benches for quick access to commonly used tools. As they were commonly used tools, they didn't get too dirty. The rest were in boxes on shelves in my tool room, out of view and away from the dust/dirt/grime.
Yeah, sometimes the hooks come off, can't see why people get so worked up about little things like that. Nothings perfect.

Pegboard is like training wheels for a bicycle. Pegboarders need a place to store tools until they can afford a real tool box.

The must have, and the proper classy way to be a man pegboarder is to shadow the tools, smoking detail.:FIREdevil

Interesting read so far. I used it in my old garage and it allowed me to get SO MUCH stuff up off the floor without sacrificing the floor space that cabinets would require (average sized 2-car garage, not a lot of room). I could hang things like funnels, grease guns etc. whereas before I just had piles of ****.

I think I might take a different approach in this garage with shelving units, and clear bins. I have three tool boxes, so I'm hoping that gives me enough space to store most things. Still looking for ideas on increasing efficiency of storage space.

Oh, and I don't want to cover up my stripe I worked so hard for. LOL.

I have a small space and I feel that the pegboard allows me to capitalize on the wall space above my workbench. I like to hang tools that I use frequently for quick access. To those that have the problem of hooks falling out all of the time, try talon hooks.

http://www.talonhooks.com/

They have a retainer screw that keeps them from coming out until you want them to. Here's my setup.

I'm not a fan of pegboard in the garage since anything hanging from it gets dirty quickly and I don't have a lot of time to dust the garage. Also not a fan of how it makes things on display to the neighborhood if the door is open.

The shed is a different story. I have a small section for small garden tools, spool of trimmer line, extra mower blades, bag of misc. OPE parts like sparkplugs, air and fuel filters, belts, and a carb kit for the snowblower, etc.

I think what ruins pegboard for a lot of people is the fact that it was always made out of cheap Masonite. Then like said many times above, you grab one tool, and four come crashing down. I've never been a fan of it, just for that reason. there is also the fact that is starts collecting dirt in behind it, or spiders building nest back in behind. I guess I'd rather just have a plain wall, and run a screw in where I want to hang a sign, and keep all tools in a toolbox.

But I'm not knocking ones for using it, and today there are more aesthetic brands of pegboard than the plain brown Masonite. One thing with pegboard, you have to do more traveling back and forth for tools when working on something than you do with wheeling a box up to the project. It all boils down to what one finds convenient.

f66....Welcome to Garage Journal.

Very nice and neat setup that you have showing. I do like that. If you don't mind me asking, do you have your stereo that is above your monitor or TV sunk into the wall?

Kevin 54,

Thanks. My Garage is a product of using many ideas from this site over the past couple of years. I have a small TV recessed into the wall, no stereo at present.

Very nice setup. I may have to use this idea in mine (eventually).
