Why do people place an ad like this. *****Wanted (or for sale) one sx3d8g pre 1970 in oz99lp or 45kj0sk is ok also.**** With no picture or even a hint of the tool/part wanted.

I understand the original poster may know exactly what he wants and maybe 3% of those reading the ad know what he wants or has for sale. For the rest of us idiots a photo would be nice. Because I don’t know if I have one or not and I don’t feel like doing an internet search for a number.

Ditto. I feel the same way about snap on sellers on here only post a bunch of part numbers. Then a picture of everything together. I only know a f710d is an older 3/8 ratchet because I just traded for one lol. Other then that :dunno:

only important people know specific part numbers and can tell if that first letter being a g or an f is the straight or curved handle.

if you don't know, you obviously don't have it (sarcasm off now).

i feel ya, i know tools for what they are, tools. leave part numbers out of it unless its something that you have no clue about or its eerily similar to something else.

Because they know it messes with people... Lol... And there probably trying to appeal to a specific target audience versus your average Joe.

Btw.. I have no clue what those part numbers mean.. Ha..

Shouldn't someone trying to sell something try to appeal to everyone?

Only when they have problems moving products.. While some people are googling, complaining others are buying.

No different than me heading Into a Ferrari dealer and kicking tires...

I think the thought process of the seller or seeking buyer is that it gets straight to the point. Certain items are so specific that if you have it/need it; you more than likely know what it is. Now this does eliminate the "O I think grampa use to have one of those, based on a picture, let me check for you" and thus the likely hood of buying it cheap.

I have placed a few WTB ads on craigslist and cannot begin to tell the amounts of frustration that only a picture provides. For examples sake I could post a picture of a car, saying I want to buy a green Ford truck. Well people will contact you with "I have a blue dodge dakota for sale". :eyecrazy: Listing part numbers and specifics usually eliminates the mornos..... usually. But it also eliminates some good deals.

Same for selling. I have posed a few items that were extremely specific. As in if you didn't know what it is, you probably don't need it. In this case high tech electronic repair equipment. I would list specs in the ad that would be helpful to a real buyer. Yet I had a handful of folks call and ask what it is, what it does, and my favorite if my price was firm. I just can't understand why someone would buy something that they don't know what it is or have a use for. Then again that is probably why a large percentage of society is in debt.

Look on the bright side. Sure it's frustrating and inefficient but rather than give it much thought, I figure it just gives the rest of us an edge.

I worked for years as a construction cost estimator, bidding work and writing contracts. Specifics are key, but so is context. Not everyone get that.

I started a thread like this last year. I have tons of tools that I've discovered are collectible. I have no idea of the part numbers or date stamp or other subtle differences. So yes if you want me to go look then you better have a fair amount of detail in your wanted ad or I'm not getting out of my chair.

The better a description, the more likely a web search will pull it up for potential buyers or sellers. Keywords bring hits. Pictures sell product.

In short: their loss.

If you are curious, why not just contact the seller and ask for a pic?

Agree with the above! I have lots of odd stuff that I got with tool lots or full box purchases. I would be the kind of guy that might sell these items cheap if I knew someone who wanted them. However, If I don't understand what a buyer is looking for, I certainly can't let them know that I have it.

I agree completely.
