When my one Uncles died i got offered any of his tools. I mulled over over a few things but my wife pointed out how utterly useless (and huge!) this early 1951 craftsman saw was! & I declined.

My Dad has one of these when I was growing up. It had the guard missing. Damn thing would throw sawdust in your eyes every time I used it. Even with safety glasses, LOL.

I've got a Bosch worm drive that I got at Lowes when I was working there back in college. Spotted it on the shelve marked down to like $75. A few years back I bought a little 314 PC that I thought I would use a lot, but I was wrong, just collects dust. Did buy a track saw when I was building some kitchen cabinets, which has been really handy.

I probably need a sidewinder. Just been using my trusty worm gear saw when I need to.

It throws up a lot of dust even with the guard!. I did use that saw quite a bit until i bought a different Craftsman saw (i gave to my neighbor).

I have a PC 314 that i really like. I did a separate thread just on that saw! It needed a new fine tooth blade and brushes replaced. https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=419667&highlight=porter+cable+314

I have a Skilsaw 77worm gear that i got for $25 at a yard sale. Guy was leaving his home to go to assisted living (god bless him) and it is a beast, but way too heavy for general use. I bought the magnesium base Skilsaw shortly after. In fact i have a small 5 1/2 in Ryobi cordless circ saw that gets used if it is just like one or two small cuts.

Ive tried my best to keep it simple, but dang if there isnt a reason to snag another-

1-early 2000's Dewalt 7.25" (wont die!)

2- 70's Skill 77 (for brick, stone, metal..... you get the idea)

3- Milky M18 Fuel (cordless is nice)

4 -Makita Track saw (game changer)

5 -Milky 8.25" corded metal saw (not a huge fan, thinking of selling for the FUEL version)

6 -16" vintage Ryobi beam saw (just a rebadged Makita like bigblockyeti)

Maybe a few other 7.25" sitting around, but nothing worth mentioning.

My 02 cents- Best Basic Corded Circ Saw- Makita 5007F

Yeah, my Bosch is a magnesium base. It's not too bad. The weight can sometimes be used to your advantage. My concrete forming guy uses the regular Skilsaw 77, and once we we used each other's saw and he noted how much lighter the mag use is. But the framers doing an addition in my house were all using Makita sidewinders.

I'll have to order that little blade for my 314. I had forgotten I have that, LOL.

I just gave my $20 garage sale HD77 some love. The base plate was bent and the oem cord was just too short. Got a Magnesium base from ebay for $30, and the 12/3 25' extension cord was on sale for $16 at menards. Now she will be set for a while.

My other saw is a older Makita that a guy gave me for free when I bought some other stuff from him. It has a metal cutting blade on it.

I have been in the market for another lighter duty saw for general use. I REALLY want the Milwaukee M18, but for the amount of current use, that is too much to spend.

that's a nice find on the magnesium base plate. I have looked a number of times and have never found something like that, only cords, switches and the handle. Never a mag base plate

I have 4 of them.

The oldest one is a cheap Skil sidewinder I bought in the 70's. There's a lot of end play in the spindle, but it refuses to die. Latest abuse was cutting Hardi siding and trim.

I also have an old Skil worm gear, but don't like it, and never use it.

When I started building our house, I bought a new Milwaukee corded sidewinder. I don't like it much either. I wanted to use it with a cutting guide, but the shoe isn't parallel with the blade.

The one I actually use all the time is a Milwaukee M18 cordless I bought about ten years ago. It's my go-to saw for everything.

I suspect the average GJ guy has 4 circular saws ........only one that gets used every so often. With the power miter saw the go to tool as all the hand saws watch.

Dead people. I have only ever bought one circular saw, all the rest I ended up with from parents/friends dying. I have more than one circular saw because of dead people.

For the longest time, I only had one, the ubiquitous or is it quintessential Skill 77?

Since I have a soft spot for old tools...
And a special soft spot for the old polished case power tools from the 50's and 60's...

Well...
suddenly on Craigslist, three old Craftsman Circular Saws that were in beautiful, darn near unused condition popped up.
All were still in their metal cases, and they were all priced for a song.

I just couldn't resist.

So, in a span of two weeks, I bought all three.
Fortunately for me, I haven't seen any more for sale.

Although, I know of the whereabouts of a vintage Porter Cable Circular Saw.....

I've got a few circular saws in my collection. Nothing compared to Bigblockyeti's collection!
  • Bosch 7-1/4" mag worm drive
  • Skil 7-1/4" sidewinder (1960s)
  • Skil 7-1/4" sidewinder (1980s)
  • Skil 67 blue label 6-1/2" worm drive
  • 2x Skil 77 blue label 7-1/4" worm drives
  • Skil 825 blue label 8-1/4" worm drive
  • Skil 107 blue label 10" worm drive
  • Skil 127 blue label 12" worm drive
  • 2x Makita 18V LXT cordless 5-3/8" carbide metal saws
  • Makita 18V LXT cordless 6-1/2" sidewinder
  • Milwaukee M28 cordless 6-1/2" sidewinder
I don't really use most of them that often, with the exception of the Milwaukee and Makita which I use a lot in my everyday work as an electrician. With that said, I have restored all the vintage Blue Labels and they have all come in handy at one time or another on various home projects. A vintage Makita 16-5/16" beam saw is definitely on the restoration wish list.

"cause…I can"

Same here tarmy - 55 years ago my wife "shot herself in the foot" when she actually admitted that she'd decided she wanted to marry me when she found out I had my own leatherworking tools - (she was the ONLY member of her family born with a brain, the rest thought that if you didn't have "car mechanic" or "TV repairman", etc, embroidered on your coveralls, you could NOT possibly do those things)

guess what my comeback is on the VERY RARE occasions she asks the OP's question of me?

VERY short conversation, ... Steve

I've got at least 10 (one of which is a 50th anniversary limited edition gold Skilsaw 77 that's never been out of its plastic case) but I don't have a wife so I don't give a **** what she thinks. Come to think of it that also could explain why I don't have a wife.
