Why does no one put sockets here?

I don't think it has anything to do with OCD, but rather that space works for you. I used to keep my sockets there, but found they fit better in a lower drawer in a different box.

When I had that style of box, I kept my sockets there. But the box I now have doesn't have that kind of top compartment. Most of my sockets are kept on my tool cart now.

I'm 6'6" and the top of my refrigerator is a work surface. (smile) Now those bottom drawers are a different story...

Seriously, though, my sockets get used as a hobby/homeowner working around the house, on several bicycles, and on all my cars (including an old Triumph TR3). I keep my sockets at hand level because they're so often reached for and the ergonomics of this seems just about right.

Now I don't have a top box, so they are here:

My sockets and ratchets live in the top of my Husky box. The 1/4 deep sockets store upright in the holder I built and it won't fit in a drawer.

i keep my impact sockets in the top along with my torx, allen,e torx. a set of 3/8" drive deepwells,1/4" deepwells. my 1/2" drive shallow, extenstions. couple snap on ratchets and a few other things.

i guess i got it from my dad, its where his 1/2" and 3/4" drive sockets are in his box so ive just followed the pattern. though i admit i need a bigger box to make the outlay better as some doesn't need to be up there. i just don't have storage otherwise.

See if I were to ever get a top box, I'd get the one without that top compartment, what way I can pile **** up there.

Top compartment FULL of sockets used the most in 1/4,3/8,and 1/2", but I also have 8 other drawers full of sockets. I have them in certain spots to add to the speed of my work, and have tool "sets" for certain jobs. Speed is money in flat rate.

Sockets in home shop are mostly on top of roll cab, no top box. I need more tool storage at home!

Next I will be tooling up the new enclosed race trailer, and have spent a lot of time working on a plan.

I prefer to have mine in a lower drawer so I'm not constantly reaching up there. Not that I'm overly short (5'9") It just seems like a pain in the *** to me. Besides, there would be an avalanche of random **** falling out of the top of my box if I had to dig through it all for some sockets haha

Ok all you people that can not reach or see the top of the box have I got a great deal for all of you. I have just invented a new leg stretcher and for only 3 payments of $19.99 they can be yours.

In automotove work it is better to be shorter. I am 6-1 and keep hitting my head when I stand up or bend over. I am a large person and can't get into many spaces. Then again I am not a mechanic.

There are advantages to being any height. I like my sockets in the top because everthing else gets stacked and slides off when I open the top. I would rather have the sockets lower but I can see them ok. If my box was any taller like some models I could not see them.

What ever works for you and your box is perfect.
I am lucky and can reach the back of the top shelf in the kitchen cabinets. My wife calls me daily to get things down. LOL

I haven't changed since my beginnings with just a 6 drawer chest and still use the top for sockets. One has metric the other sae which is at capacity with trays and twist lock strips hanging off the side. I'm 6' but have had back injuries so I don't like stooping over and will keep the set up till I've total run out of space. My bike lift will lift the bottom of the bike up to 5' and the sockets are around 5'6" ht.
