This is the chaos in my brain:

So the other thread talking about pocket knives got me missing having my Leatherman Wave with me, cause its too many times that I’ve needed a simple screwdriver that woulda saved me a trip down several flights of stairs and out to a vehicle.. I have an older wave, its broken, and yes i know i can just warranty it - but its been several years and i still haven’t done it yet.. So i go on the Leatherman site - and of course, theres a newer 2018 model with replaceable cutters in the plier’s jaw - AND - its on sale for 20% off..

- Added to cart

Browsing the site, i see Leatherman has a knife “multi tool” with deployable screwdriver tips.. on sale, 30% off..

- Added to cart, checkout.

I discover Kydex holsters for the wave online, spend an hour looking at different brands, pick the one i like best, add options, with shipping - $60..

- talk myself out of that, go back to Amazon

Buy a new leatherman belt clip for like $10. Mind you, i already have one on the OTHER wave i have..

Start thinking about my purchase, say “why did i just buy another Wave AND another knife - cause if the knife has screwdriver bits, i probably wont even carry the Wave..

- thought hits me, i wonder if anyone else makes a knife like this...
- go back to amazon

Find the Kershaw Select Fire knife Multi tool. Wow.. only $30.. how can I NOT buy that since it looks nicer than the Leatherman and has insane positive reviews.. this thing looks perfect.

- added to cart - checked out..

But check this thing out man -
Kershaw Select Fire (1920); Multifunction Pocketknife with 3.4-Inch 8Cr13MoV Stainless Steel Blade, Black Glass-Filled Nylon Handle, 1/4-Inch Hex Drive, 2 Flathead Bits and 2 Crosshead Bits; 5 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IVPKOU/?tag=atomicindus08-20

So now i have all this stuff coming...

Side note - i wanted to buy my sister a new suitcase for Chirstmas cause she travels a lot. ill see her this weekend. That leads to me having FIVE suitcases sitting in boxes here now..

I think i have issues.. this click to buy world is killing me..

I am really liking that knife. I cant wait for it to show up.. I’m NOT expecting it to be as nice as my Milwaukee Hardline that i carry now, but it looks like it’ll do exactly what i want.. I’m just hoping the blade flicks open really easy, and the bits dont wind up grabbing the inside of my pocket when i pull it out. If it does that, ill be happy.. I’m still surprised at the price.

This is the Leatherman version. The Crater.. even on sale at 30% off, (and this is the cheapest i found it) its still slightly more expensive. $31 vs $27. At $27 the Kershaw appears to be the better option, and i really like that it has a bit extension right in the knife too. I mean, the thing really looks perfect as far as what i wanted.

Here are the newer Leatherman Waves - couple different versions. All on sale - cheapest i could find, and its right from Leatherman. The replaceable cutters was a much needed upgrade.

Kc,
Thanks for sharing. I might pick one up. I think it would have been a better design if the bit holder was just a tad shorter so it could hold a fifth bit folded closed. One could keep their most used bit in place and save time.

Guess I’m a nerd with my pocket protector! I carry a Leatherman Skeletool and a Milwaukee Fastback compact. I run a building supply resale shop and you never know what will come through the doors! From boxes to carpet, the knife takes a beating and the Fastback can dump a razor blade for a new sharp one quick. One quick flip and it’s ready to cut!

But, I still need pliers and a bit driver. Skeletool has a great blade, just cringe at dragging it across carpet on concrete! I save it for when I misplace the Fastback!

Thanks for sharing this new option! Might just need to add to the collection!

I watched a bunch of video reviews on it.. Walmart even had it for sale for $10 years ago it seems.. i gotta admit in the Walmart Blue color, it looks much more gimmicky. I’m not AT ALL expecting a high end knife, just something that will work. I wish the bit driver extension had its own lock to keep it deployed, but beggers cant be choosers. If nothing else ill be able to tell if the Leatherman is any better.

I used to carry my Charge in a home made Kydex sheath. I've since switched to a home made leather pancake case.

For me, the pliers are more important than the screwdriver, so while that Kershaw looks nice (though I'm wondering what they did with the spring), it isn't something I'd EDC.

Yeah, the Plus models with the cutters were sorely needed. They're selling the Heritage version with an all leather sheath for the same price:

Who the hell needs a can opener or that awl thing.. I’m just going to work, i didnt get deployed to Vietnam.

Probably for the camper types who don't want to beat their can of Wolf brand chili against a rock for 20 minutes to get it open -- severing a major artery in the process. :) For more than emergency fastening, it's better to use an actual spinner driver with a nice handle and then put bits into it. Some have the bits built into the handle.

Multi tools make great Christmas gifts for the people in your life. I give away about 5 of them annually. The Winchester and Shrade brand ones are usually only like $15. They come with pliers, multiple knives, other tools built in. I bought 3 generic ones off ebay for $7 each that look like Leatherman ones, but they have actually 1/4 hex adapters and 1/4 Phillips and slot bits included.

I put one in each of the family cars. I never actually had a Leatherman. I bet the quality is great.

I own 3 multi tools . A Wave , a Gerber and an original Leatherman PST11. I carry the original. Simple light weight . It has all I need. I spent more than it was worth for a new leather sheath. I also carry a pocket knife.

I bought 5 of the Select Fires when they were released through Walmart for $10 a piece. At that price I was not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised by its performance as well as fit and finish. I never did use the one I opened much as I always had a dedicated folder as well as a multitool, but for the people looking for a knife with a (long) bit driver and some bits it should be a excellent choice. I ended up selling a couple and giving the rest away to friends. I wanted another and went looking online only to find them in the $35 range. Given I had purchased them for $10 originally I could not bring myself to pay that for one, but I’m sure it’s worth the price tag they currently carry.

It has been my daily carry since December of 2016, so two years straight.

There are times I wish I had a pair of pliers, but for 95% of the time, this does all I need out of a multi-tool.

I can't keep the blade very sharp, but I'm no expert at sharpening blades, so that may be my own fault.

Not being able to keep it sharp is my biggest complaint, but again, that may be my own fault. My daily carry before this was a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian, and I was more successful at keeping that sharp, so I don't think it is all me.

Just get one of those cheap handheld sharpeners. Like Klein , jonard, or gerber. Don’t try to do each side individually.

Here - $6. This thing is great

Ive actually used the can opener several times. Both for opening cans when I didn't have a can opener and as a packaging slitter. The cater to idiots safety culture company I used to work banned knives so pulling out the can opener when I needed to open a box raised fewer eyebrows than the blade.
A 1/4" bit driver would be nice, they do make an adapter from the flat bit to hex bit if you are so inclined.

I will say this about Leatherman, they have really got away from the company I purchased my first PST II from 15-20 years ago. I'm pretty sure I will shop the competition if I ever need a replacement for my current Wave.

LOL, because the can opener is FAR more dangerous opening boxes than the knife.

Also, they used to make a bit driver that fit between the pliers with the handle closed. It was called the Tool Adapter.

I dont need a saw, a file, a second blade, eyeglass driver, can opener, awl, 3 different flat drivers....give me bigger scissors, and REAL Phillips drivers and real flatheads that are like 2” long instead... i mean i like the idea of the versatility, but when you sell a “multi tool” driver kit, to support your “multi tool” - its getting to be a bit much. I can live without the bottle opener too. really - things aren’t like they were 25 years ago, you just dont use that stuff a lot.

I wish they had an “outfit your own” option, where they offered like 15 options of inserts and you could pick the 5 or so you really wanted to be factory installed in the Wave you were buying direct from Leatherman.

Give me another week or two and ill be looking at Kydex holsters again. It ***** too that even with carrying a wave, people will still carry a dedicated knife just cause a real knife is quicker and easier to deploy one handed when your’re rushing at work..

Now I’m looking at that “tactical/edc” style belt from Next Belt.. i woulda purchased it 2 hours ago if i woulda managed to load the gift cards i have into my paypal account, but i cant get it to work..

The TD bank site is so stupid, that it asked me to create a user name - i type in “kctyphoon” on that page.. now when I go to try and sign in, i cant - cause on the home page theres NO WAY to type your username without the first character being uppercase.. so it comes out “Kctyphoon” - and then says wrong username and wont let me access the account to do what i need so i can load these dumb gift cards onto PayPal.

But anyway - if any of you guys are already carrying a phone, and then like a multi tool, or flashlight, or whatever - on a regular belt (mine is a carhartt), and it gets annoying how the belt doesn’t really like the weight - (esp when you’re unbuckling at a urinal. I’m waiting for my phone to wind up in a rest stop toilet) check out this belt from NextBelt. They are 20% off and free shipping on the their site right now. I think it was like $43 but i didnt buy it yet.

So much fun stuff out there. Victorinox makes a watch tool knife for maintaining mechanical watches, it’s discontinued and the watch guys go nuts for it. I would love to own one but then I’m paying a major premium for what are really just inferior tools at the end of the day.

GJ is not great for my wallet. OP you mentioned easy one click ordering. I seriously think I ordered an M12 a day for more than a week from HD, so easy with PayPal. It was easy and each tool individually seems cheap. I made the mistake of adding it all up. Not good but I should be set for years!

Anybody else interested in buying one should look it up on eBay. It looks like you can get one new for about $9 less there than you'll pay on Amazon.

Make sure you take your time reading the listing before buying because there are several handle colors and smooth and serrated blades listed.

Yeah looks like if you want the serrated blade you can get it cheaper on eBay. I got the smooth blade anyway, so those look to be about the same price as the Amazon listing. Thanks for posting though. I'm surprised I didn't look before.

Here you go. This is one plain blade listing. There are others. You can save a few bucks if it's not too late to cancel your Amazon order.

That is one of the reasons I still carry my PST around, that thing sees a lot of duty, it is compact and lightweight, and contains what I need (pliers, real flatblades and proper phillips).
I really dislike that most multitools that contain what I actually use on an almost daily basis are huge monstrosities... And then theres is that pseudo phillips driver found on a lot of multitools that fall into the smaller PST sized tools. Whats the point? My original PST is a tool, a lot of these other things like you say are poor multi-kits.

Now THAT would be an interesting deal.

There is a guy in Canada who does this sort of thing for Swiss Army Knives. You tell him what you want and he puts it together. Does a heck of a job with the scales, too. Check him out.

Decent enough it seems. It's not a $100 knife, so don't expect one. But seems good. At least if the bits **** I can swap them out with different ones. If nothing else it'll keep my Milwaukee Hardline safe at home for a while. My new Wave and the Leathman version of this both shipped, so who knows what I'll actually wind up carrying everyday. I'm not a huge fan of Leatherman's modified Phillips bits.
