Why I love my Sears

In my neck of the woods I have a nice small home town Sears. A very nice Mom and Pop kind of one. Anyways the lady's there are very nice and always helpful. So awhile ago I decide to ask them about the tools that people bring in for exchange. I was told they put them in a big barrel in the back. Once it is full they send for a pick up to come get it and take it away. They also told me that none of the stuff in it is tallied or any record of what goes in. So I had to ask. Is there any chance I might get to look in it? They told me sure. When we can get it out. Well that day finally came. Lets just say I was amazed at what I saw with just the short amount of time I had to look. So here is what I found in there. Best part. This cost me $00.00. Yes a couple of them need some repairs/rebuild, but some look like they never have had hardly any use.

Great score!!!

I once asked about getting access to the warranty tool returns at my local Sears and was practically thrown out of the store. These two clerks laid into me like they had caught me trying to steal something. They both seemed genuinely pissed that I would even ask such a question. One of them said every guy who walks in the door asks about how to get a hold of the warranty tools. The other guy said if we gave you (me) a broken tool, what would prevent you (me) from taking the tool to another Sears and turning it in for a new tool? Although that wasn't my intent, I can see their point. I was really only interested in picking up a few old ratchets and rebuilding them for my own use/collection. I tried to explain that to them but they weren't hearing a word of it.

Anyway, you were pretty lucky. If you had asked for the same consideration at my local Sears, you could very well have ended up hanging from a light pole out in the parking lot with a sign pointing up at your rotting carcass saying, "BEWARE. This is what happens to those who ask about acquiring warrantied hand tools!"

Nice, but I'm really surprised they would do that. I'm sure Sears has a written policy on the disposal of warrantied tools that prohibits this.

I absolutely love those round head fine tooth ratchets. I have a couple of clones and about five of the craftsman ones.

This is why I love my sears.:D I know they are not supposed to do this. Just the people there are almost like family.

If I could get a store to let me take a look and I ran across a flying V flex, I would be trying to buy a brand new flex and see if they would "warranty" it and give me the old one. That way I'm paying for something similar in their eyes, but gold in mine.

Great score for you!

I spent a lot of time in Sonora in my twenties, helping a friend build a house up in Cedar Ridge. Beautiful country you live in there.

I'll second that same feeling.

I'm just wondering how this works out for the shop owners though. Wouldn't Sear's head office check that collected tools tallied with the refunds claimed by the particular shop? Of does each independent shop just individually "eat" the cost of warranty returns?

When I inquired, they told me that when the "tool drum" was full, it got sent back.
