Why is pegboard so disappointing? Am I doing it wrong?

I designed and built the dies that makes the Pegmate clips. That was probably 30 years ago. Still have a bag of them somewhere.
So are they no longer available anyplace? If not, what happened? They actually work pretty well, especially on the single curved hooks.

I have pegboards over my work bench with common stuff like hammers, screw drivers, pliers, some saws and little misc tools in pouches on it. I have 2 different sets of hooks, the hammer ones have 2 long rods attached to each other so hammers easily hang off them
There are two types of single hooks, one only has the bends on top and there always falling out, the other ones have little posts on the back to hold into a second hole and they work better.

I needed a bunch of hooks for my pegboard, and a search led me to ebay, which led me to plastic hooks that have a clip to keep them from falling out. They work great, especially for stuff that is too big for tool boxes. As others have said- long rules, squares, long clamps, etc. My tool boxes are already too full to be efficient, and I don't have floor space for more tool boxes. But I do have a lot of wall space. I guess I'm old-school, but I like the look of neatly organized pegboard.

As a kid my grandfathers basement shop had pegboard everywhere, tools all over and I never remember hooks being a pain like they are today. I am not a fan, but I have some around. My favorite is the metal panels, I have some from Lyon, intended for the ends of metal shelving, and some traditional.

I use it for things that either are: too bulky for drawers (hacksaws, Japanese saws, pipe wrenches), easily lost (new tubes of epoxy, glues, small parts), or really really frequently used (small selection of hammers, adjustable wrench, basic screwdrivers). I also add the hf magnetic bar, tape holders, and other gadgets as needed to make the space as workable as I could.

In my past life as a HS shop teacher I totally believed in tool panels. I often built new ones with 3/4 ply, real screw in hooks from reputable sources, and shop made cradles and brackets. These were made for hand tools, and power tools, and often built into a large cabinet. With multiple people, or an industrial application have stuff that gets used out makes a ton of sense. At home, drawers rule for dense storage, but it’s still nice to have a screwdriver rack out to grab one rather and put back.

It's like asking what is your favorite color...it works for some people and not for others. I've had a small section of pegboard hanging in my basement workshop for probably 30 years. I keep basic household hand tools on it - hammers, screwdrivers, chisels, paint brushes, and so on. I also have a toolbox, along with drawers and shelves. They all serve their purpose.

Pegboard is great for what it is. I have it over my main bench for my most frequently used tools to be close at hand. I wouldn't want to open a drawer to grab a hammer or pair of pliers. Buy the right sized hooks and you can re-arrange as necessary whenever you want - can't beat that!

My experience in my father's shop is the hooks come out of the pegboard about 50% of the time when grabbing a tool from the pegboard. It is a pain having to pick up the hook(s) from the floor and put them back in all the time.

My father probably just bought some pegboard and hooks from a local lumberyard back in the day and the hooks are not the best ones out there.

I always wanted peg board and finally installed some over the work bench in the garage. I like it, but it is limiting and sometimes even annoying when the pegs fall out.

Who knows?
I bought and read "Setting Up Shop" by Sandor Nagyszalanczy. And while this is focused on woodworking, many ideas translate to the garage.

The author says that drawers are far better than wall cabinets or wall hanging for tool storage. I built a workbench with 12 drawers and never looked back.
Thanks for the book recommendation.

This might be along the lines of what you're after - I made use of wooden dowels, but using screws would have been much faster.

Exactly the same story here, I came to loath pegboard. It's best (only) use is for ventilation in sliding cabinet doors. My Dad had some little hairpin like clips that would slip over the hook and snap into the next lower hole. It slowed the rate that the hooks would pop out and fall to the floor but then you had to also look around on the floor for the tiny clip. Later he had some hooks with a stud off the back which fit into the next lower hole on the pegboard. Pegboard holds "Permanently Banned" status in my shop.

I'm not a fan of pegboard at all but I did use it in my basement in my modding room. No way I'd use it in a shop or garage... things would just get too dusty/dirty all the time, plus I don't want to look at the tools. It's way better in a drawer to me than hanging on the wall.

With that said I only use these hooks on my basement pegboard.

Made in the USA, they don't need anyt type of support or bracket to keep them "locked" in place on the pegboard and they never just fall out.

Very stout. Plus being plastic if I need to slightly shape something to make a custom fit, I can easily heat it up with my heatgun and bend it so that a particular shape is molded/then kept, where I would not be able to do that with metal ones as easily.

I have peg board (metal) over my Milwaukee and Husky work benches/toolboxes. I added the old fashioned peg board to the back first so that the hooks would stay better. I hang tools used a lot and other things that are used a lot. A few hooks can come off, but I try not to use single hooks which are more prone to pop off. I also use garage wall organizers in a few places. My old garage had 1/4 and 1/8 inch old style peg board on a couple of walls and I used them a lot to hang things I used a lot. They were a bit more problematic as far as pegs coming loose. I also have storage tools boxes and rolling shelves.

I have a couple pieces of metal pegboard in my woodshop and it really works well. I have 1 or 2 pieces of metal peg board in my garage as well, one the far wall where I don't normally go I have stuff hanging on it that's rarely used. Right inside the garage door by one of my cabinets I have another piece for stuff that I need a lot and hanging makes sense, drying towels for drying vehicles, different cleaners I use a lot, squeegee, etc.

I installed pegboard with a brushed stainless steel look that looks better to me than standard pegboard years ago in the garage, but it's for brooms, car cleaning brushes, snow shovels etc. For me, "real" tools belong in a tool box, cabinet etc. Why would I want my tools out in the open, gathering dust or worse. But if you have problems with loose pegs, get the plastic retaining clips, they really do hold pegs securely.

I use peg board for all the common use stuff. I have a combination of hard board peg board for my wood working generic stuff and steel peg board for my sockets and open ends for Auto work. I even put it inside my corded tool cabinet for all the adjustment tools and accessories.
peg board has a useful place in my shop.

I have 8 panels total of wall control in a couple different spots...it's on walls where anything more than a few inches sticking out would get in the way and so the space would be wasted otherwise. Works well for things like squares, magnetic trays (since wall control is metal, magnetic accessories are also an option), grease guns, safety glasses, funnels, clamps, levels, pry bars, etc.

That said, it's not my favorite storage solution...I would never do screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches on one, those go in the big tool box.

Pegboard seems to be a common thing. It seems so promising...an entire sheet, maybe an entire wall of places to hang things up. And it's fairly cheap. So what's not to like?

In reality, every time I arrange pegboard it ends up just being empty over time because it's a giant PITA. I think the biggest problems is the pegs just fall out. Or you can't get the kind of peg you need for the tool. Or you buy a multi-pack of pegboard pegs, and it comes with 3 pegs you need and 54 little trinkets that are pointless. But most of all the pegs just ****.

Instead of pegboard, I'm thinking just a sheet of plywood you can drive nails in and/or screw in coated garage hooks seems to be more practical. But why does pegboard stick around if it's so lame? Do other people love it? Am I buying the wrong kinds of hooks, or did I miss pegboard training class at some point?
Pegboard is the "Pocket Fisherman" of garages! I'm with you... plywood and GOOD screw-in hangers.

I don't have any pegboard anymore. I have tool boxes, benches with plastic totes underneath, and a large lateral file cabinet for tool storage. Above benches I keep a few commonly used tools on shop made holders and use magnetic strips. Seems much easier to keep organized than when I had pegboard. The walls are OSB so it is easy to screw something into a wall anywhere.

I am happy with my Pegboard at this point.... I have been very back and forth over the last 10 years i've lived with this garage.... I definitely see the value in having everything in a cabinet or toolbox but also feel like having a limited amount of frequently used tools at hand can be an advantage.

Here is an older iteration ..... this was handy but waaaay to cluttered and drove me nuts to look at.

These look interesting, I am going to order a pack and try them.

I like pegboard. The big issue for me is it deteriorates over time in our humid weather if in an non temperature controlled area, which much of mine is. My big shop (only like 26 x 30) was all walls white pegboard when we bought the house.

I like the versatility of being able to install shelves, baskets, tools, etc. and to be able to rearrange as needs change. I agree that you need to get good hardware or face frustration.

I have had good luck with hardware from this site, which mostly caters to store fixtures:

They also have gridwall, slatwall and a lot of other items that could be of interest.

Merry Christmas to all.

Agree ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
50 wood working clamps
25 bars clamps
50 C clamps
12” saw blades
Dado heads
Hand saws
Pipe wrenches
Levels, Framing squares
Selection of hammers

all have their place on peg board

Also agree ………..no peg board for sockets, wrenches, screw drivers, pliers etc

I do have a jig saw, 1/2” corded drill, 40 year old Craftsman router and 4x8 Milwaukee pad sander that has not moved on 8 years……they are more tool wall art.

🤔On the clamps there is a weight limit on peg board where the holes give way…….😳😳

I had pegboard in my old shop, have gone to drawers in the new, the idea was to go for a cleaner look. I like the look, but really miss the pegboard. The few times I had a problem with hooks falling out or things falling off hooks it was because I was using the wrong hooks, switch them out, problem solved, all cheap fiber pegboard and run of the mill hodgepodge of hooks. I had tool chests too, so really used the pegboard more for the oddball stuff I didn't use as often (and would have a hard time remembering where it was if it were in drawers). Feel like the new setup is much less efficient space wise.

I'm very much on the love-hate train as well as far as pegboard is concerned. Picked up my first piece at the restore and then it sat in the garage taking up space for quite some time before I determined a good place to actually fasten it. I currently use it for those oddball tools that don't play well with drawers (carpenter's square, boxes of Dremel accessories that are lesser used pieces, etc.)

Having a 3D printer greatly increased my ability to think up things to put on pegboard, because now I can print hooks or other accessories that fit the specific tools I am looking to mount. That said I can't see myself ever using pegboard for general hand tools like screwdrivers and wrenches, because I find drawers (primarily shallow ones) mostly appealing for those. Not to hijack the thread by any means, but what's the deal with toolboxes doing away with shallow (1.5-2") drawers anyway? I cannot find a really good use of the four and five inch drawers that doesn't require me to root through things to get what I'm looking for, leading to much wasted toolbox real estate.

I use the 1/4 inch thick sheets sold as "garage panels" at the local big box
I use it mostly for long handle tools (rakes. shovels, brooms, etc)
the hooks are all size dependent and are thicker wire for the bigger holes
they hold more weight and do not fall out
I got it for the flexibility but have found that once I have it set up I rarely move anything

It's cheaper to build a big tool box with fewer tall drawers. If you move up to better boxes, you can get lots of shallow drawers if you so choose.

While I do know that's true, I'm but a simple hobbyist who can't justify spending thousands ordering a custom box since I don't wrench for a living. As much as I'd love to, I'd rather spend the money on projects.

Peg board is very frustrating. I have a whole wall of it in my garage. In the shop I have slatwall/slatboard. Much better, but less versatile.
