Why is pegboard so disappointing? Am I doing it wrong?

Like some of the others, I use it for levels, yard sticks, etc. Stuff too long to fit in tool box drawers. Also put some bins on it for tape measures, markers/pencils. I went with the black metal and then attached it to a piece of black painted 3/4 plywood. Also built a holder for my hardware bins that attached to the plywood and made it my charging station as well.

Are these truly as great as they appear?
I am redoing some pegboard and these could be a huge game changer for me.
Yes. I have a sheet of pegboard above my garage workbench and have these hooks. No complaints. The hooks never fall off.

Awesome, thank you! Off to buy some soon as I am adding pegboard to the back of a mobile bench.

True Temper at one time made a garage organizer series with lengths of metal pegboard and various hooks for all kinds of yard tools, ladders .. even wheel barrows. We had a carport and a series of large double door closets along one of the walls. Everything was neatly on hooks -- The metal peg was very strong.

Have used the small square panels from Global (blue) they are nice behind a bench. I know others make metal -- have not tried. I wish someone made a nice system most people have a garage or storage area that needs to change over time. The regular peg has a hard time with heavy yard tools.

Gawd, I hate that ****!
Im all cabinets and drawers! “There’s a place for everything, and everything in its place”! And , it doesn’t get dirty, dusty, or damaged.

All of this.

The walls of the garage in my childhood home were entirely pegboard. Stuff was always getting bumped and falling off the wall.

I am getting a kick out of everyone complaining about pegboard hooks always falling out; most from experience decades ago. Buy quality pegboard and the larger diameter hooks. They are designed to work together; things have come a long way since the brown 1/8” masonite pegboard and single point hooks of the 60’s.

You wouldn’t come on the GJ and complain that none of your wrenches fit; are always rounding off bolts/your screwdrivers are too small and keep slipping in the screw slots, would you?
No different here. Use the right tool for the job. Buy wimpy pegboard hooks off the dollar table at the traveling tool show or local swap meet and you will hate them- but you only have yourself to blame, not the pegboard or the hooks.

I use K&V galvanized diamond plate metal pegboard and .206” diameter double peg single or multi point hooks; rarely have them fall out. I find it incredibly versatile for my shop and the way I work.

YMMV.

I have a small tool cabinet that I made incorporating 1/4 Masonite pegboard. I use Talon brand plastic hooks that stay put. Works well enough to keep most-used tools handy above the workbench.

Yep, buy quality 1/4" thick pegboard and good hooks and you'll be OK. I've been using pb for many years now for small, medium, and large/fairly heavy stuff. Very rarely do have a problem with the hooks falling out (just pay attention while you remove the tool or such from the hook). Sometimes you need to bend the lower hook down just a bit to help them stay in place.

I can't think of my shop without pegboard.
Kind of my thought, but why not both pegboard and tool chests/drawers? I think we're all a little OCD with tools in our own way and some may need to be on a wall in front of us, some get stored in a drawer. It's all how we personally use the tools I'd think.

Pegboard seems like a visual thing for me. I look at mine out here in the tackroom and it's just random stuff I couldn't stand just laying around. Gas/Water key, a demo hammer, short loop of yellow romex, random hand saws, couple Estwing hammers, and just stuff I can see and grab. I can't store these handsaws better than peg board without getting really fancy and overly complicated. However, I couldn't stand all the pipe wrenches on a couple hooks all in order. I'd go nuts if I have to pull 3 wrenches off to get the the one in the middle I use the most and would also look messy if they're out of order with that one up front...so those go into a drawer loosely. Work needs done around here when it tells you it needs done, not on my personal desires or plans. Grab and go.

I also think of specialized bench work, like if I only did alternator repairs and re-winding, that's when I'd have those things on a pegboard above the bench. Gunsmiths, small B&S engine repair, surface-level circuit board work; They all could use a well laid out pegboard behind a bench with a vise (nice to see some nice vises BTW).

A shop is a shop though; Garage is a DIY shop for many and a rolling toolbox set, a stationary drawer set under the bench, and pegboard all make sense in a dream world.

I do have to add that I have good pegboard and in the last 10 years the **** at the hardware stores are much more crummy and thin. Seems like it's cheap OSB with holes in it rather than that actual 1/4" thick brown stuff that you need a sailor bar fight to actually crack or break a hook out of. I'll never draw a silhouette on one again though...life changes, tools change.

Pegboard seems to be a common thing. It seems so promising...an entire sheet, maybe an entire wall of places to hang things up. And it's fairly cheap. So what's not to like?

In reality, every time I arrange pegboard it ends up just being empty over time because it's a giant PITA. I think the biggest problems is the pegs just fall out. Or you can't get the kind of peg you need for the tool. Or you buy a multi-pack of pegboard pegs, and it comes with 3 pegs you need and 54 little trinkets that are pointless. But most of all the pegs just ****.

Instead of pegboard, I'm thinking just a sheet of plywood you can drive nails in and/or screw in coated garage hooks seems to be more practical. But why does pegboard stick around if it's so lame? Do other people love it? Am I buying the wrong kinds of hooks, or did I miss pegboard training class at some point?

Wall Control steel pegboard. Not cheap, but it works well and looks nice. You can bend the tabs on the hooks so they really lock in tight.

I solved my peg board hooks falling out problem by using a cable stapler on the pegs. No problem anymore.

My son once argued with me after seeing a pegboard display, him being totally impressed, couldn't understand why I replied "I hate pegboard."

75-85% of my garage work comes working on my bicycles. I have 1 multiwrench (three-way Allen) that has its place in the header/hutch of the workbench at forehead level (with a diagonally drilled hole for that one tool), and two sets of screw drivers mounted to the 19-twenty-X tongue and groove paneling in their original plastic organizers. The three way is enough for about 60% of what I do regularly, so my mileage is very different than someone who needs access to full sets of different wrenches three times a day.

All other tools are stored in drawers or cabinets. It works for me, and after I clean up, I really prefer the clean look of tools in two different bench top boxes and a base rolling chest. (I need to go clean up, again).

I can get by without pliers for months at a time, and haven't used a hammer in even longer, but I use my hatchet at least twice a month to make kindling... its still in a drawer. For the pro wrenches, I can get the appeal of superquick access, but I'm in the garage on my time, not on-profit time, so two or three seconds here and there is not a make or break issue for me.

Thank you
Thank you
Thank you.

I just received some today and decided to test one out. GAMECHANGER

I have modified many of these hangers to fit what I need to hang. Cut shorter, bend as needed and so on.
When the hooks stay in place like these do, it makes peg board a useful storage option.

The folks that have posted about the frustrations of the past use of hooks were using just a simple hook in a hole and they did all fall out. Much better hooks available today.

I ordered a variety set and then extra single hooks with the 90°. I just showed my wife (who appreciates these things) and we will be buying more for the gym board.

I don't remember seeing the link for the Wall Control "outlet". I bought my galvanized coated unpainted steel panels from here and was very happy. They came in big heavy boxes with 8 panels in a box. YMMV but I couldn't find any issues with the panels I received. I wouldn't be surprised if when I bought, I received some of their undamaged overstock supply. Be aware that some of their panels are made with just slots and some panels are made with slots and holes. The just slot panels really limit you to only using their hangers.

ETA....

Orders from the "outlet" that are over $100.00 ship for free.

Ok so this may be my own weirdness or OCD type of thing, but I have found that when deep in a project, if I can’t find what I want easily, I grab the next best “tool” cough cough.
I found if I put tools in drawers out of sight, I tend to forget where they are when I need them.

Out of sight out of mind, I guess?

My most used tools are all within my sight. Either on a peg board or magnetic strip, in plain sight.
My cordless tools are all on a stand and my air tools are all hanging above the compressor.

This weekend I was purging a ton of **** I have carried around for years. I noticed I had three different Craig Jigs, that I stored in cabinets, that were still in the original packaging 🤬
seriously I could have used them many times over, if I remembered I had them, LOL

I hate pegboard. Looks cluttered and I hate the potential of the plinko-effect when grabbing something from the top row of tools.

I'm a toolbox kind of guy!

I had to study this and the real problem is it's hard to find good quality pegboard because everybody shops on price. So all the suppliers just keep the cheapest grade in stock. Which as everyone is saying it's basically pretty much cardboard.

You want double hardened pegboard. Pegboard is made from wood fibers and resin then coated with linseed oil and pressed under heat. The best will be shiny on both sides. The cheap junk will be shiny only on one side. The cheaper it is the less heat and linseed oil is used in it's manufacture.

I found good pegboard and was willing to pay the higher price but ran into a 50 sheet minimum order quantity as it's not a normally stocked item. Try to get the 6mm thickness which is 1/4" as most places only carry 3/16" and 1/8" which are pretty thin and flimsy.

That $2700 box holds machine tooling. Each of those drawers holds over 100lbs of ****. They are rated for 140lbs.
I'm in every drawer almost everyday.

^^^ THIS^^^

I will add to it:
- Don't put every friggin thing you own on it. That's a recipe for **** getting knocked off AND for looking like ****. - It ISN'T for the lazy.
- It's only for the things you use most often and/or want to display looking orderly.

Except many of us are using metal wall control pegboard and still are a little iffy on it.

Always use dark brown tempered pegboard not medium brown standard pegboard.

HARDBOARD GRADES

Standard grade hardboard is a medium brown panel, smooth one side with a rough crosshatch pattern on the other.

Tempered grade hardboard is impregnated under heat with linseed oil, making it tougher than Standard grade and rendering it more moisture resistant. Tempered hardboard is dark brown in color and smooth both sides.

Tempered hardboard is used when a tougher surface is required, when both surfaces need to be smooth and in high moisture areas.
